The Killarney Plaza is a 4-star hotel that anchors the town centre, on the corner of Main Street and Kenmare Place. It’s a useful spot: step out the front and you’re in the middle of Killarney’s pubs, restaurants and shops; step out the back and you’re into Killarney National Park. For golfers, that means Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is a five-minute drive, with Ross, Beaufort and Dooks all close by. Ballybunion, Tralee and Waterville are within comfortable reach on a day out.

The building has a grand, classical feel – columns in the lobby, traditional decor, the sort of place that takes itself seriously without being stuffy. Rooms have been refurbished in recent years and lean towards warm, elegant finishes rather than anything trend-led. Expect comfortable beds, decent bathrooms (some with Jacuzzi baths), robes, slippers and free Wi-Fi throughout. Food and drink is handled well across three restaurants: La Grand Pey for more formal dining, the Tan Yard for a relaxed menu, and Café du Parc for coffee and lighter bites. There’s also a lounge bar that’s a good spot for a pint after a round. The Molton Brown spa is a genuine draw – indoor pool, sauna, steam room and a full treatment menu, which earns its keep after 36 holes. Service is attentive and notably Irish in warmth. Underground parking is available but limited.
