A Beachfront Base Built for Active Days

Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort sits on the seafront at Costa Teguise, on the island’s quieter east coast. Walk out of the grounds and you’re on Playa El Ancla, a small, sheltered cove that’s good for a morning swim. Costa Teguise Golf Club is roughly 4km away, so you can be on the range within ten minutes of leaving your room. The airport is about a 15-minute transfer.

The resort was fully renovated in 2022, and it still looks fresh. The style is clean and modern, with bright communal spaces and plenty of palms around the pools. It’s a big property, with 659 rooms across the site, so expect a lively, sociable atmosphere rather than a quiet boutique feel. If you’d like a bit more space and privacy, the Royal Level is a separate, more exclusive section within the resort with its own extras.

Rooms are spacious and bright, with air conditioning, a balcony, a flat-screen TV, tea and coffee facilities and free Wi-Fi. Families or friends sharing can look at the family suites, which add a separate living area.

Food is one of the resort’s strengths, and you’ll find plenty of choice without leaving the grounds:

Olivina and Nimbra: two buffet restaurants, including a well-rated breakfast
Dolce Vita: Italian dishes in the evening
KOI: Asian cooking in the evening
Champs Sports Bar: handy for catching the football back home
Pool bars: several spread around the resort for lunch and drinks

The “Active” in the name is accurate. There’s a heated, ten-lane Olympic pool, a well-equipped gym, a busy timetable of fitness classes and a dedicated cycling centre. Several other pools give you room to unwind, and massages are available if your back needs attention after a few rounds. Staff are friendly and multilingual, and English is widely spoken.

Getting here is simple, and everything you need is close by:

Lanzarote Airport: 12–13km, around 15 minutes by car
Costa Teguise Golf Club: about 4km, roughly 10 minutes by car
Playa El Ancla: direct access from the resort
Arrecife (island capital): around 7km
Timanfaya National Park: around 20km

Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is at 11:30am. Early UK flights often land before rooms are ready, so drop your bags and head to the pool, or go straight out for an afternoon round. Once you’ve booked, you can pick your room number in advance for an extra charge. That’s useful if you want a particular view or want to be near the rest of your group.

Since the renovation, the rooms feel bright and comfortable, and the balconies are a good place for a drink before dinner. Free parking is available if you’re hiring a car, which we’d recommend for exploring the island.

Expect a well-organised operation. The team handles a lot of guests and generally does it with good humour. Half board and all inclusive are both available, and with eight restaurants and bars on site, all inclusive is good value here.

The standout is the sports set-up. Few resorts on Lanzarote match it, which makes this a strong choice for golfers travelling with partners who’d rather swim, cycle or train while you play.

Why Stay at Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort?

The main draw is the location. Very few places on Lanzarote put you this close to the water. You can walk out of your apartment, past the pools and onto a sheltered beach with its own little island. The promenade runs right past, so a morning walk or an evening stroll into town takes no planning at all.

The second reason is space. These are proper apartments rather than hotel rooms, which works well for groups who want to share a beer on the balcony after a round or eat in some nights. There’s also more to do on non-golf days than at most hotels in Costa Teguise:

A 25-metre, eight-lane pool, plus 11 other pools
Tennis courts and a gym
Kayaking, paddleboarding and other watersports through the resort’s Sands Beach Active centre

To be straight about it, the resort was built in the 1980s and parts of it show that. Returning guests are fond of the place and regularly praise the friendly staff and the setting. They also mention dated décor in some apartments, air conditioning that struggles in high summer, and Wi-Fi that isn’t always included. For a winter golf trip, when temperatures sit comfortably in the low twenties, the air conditioning is rarely an issue. If newer interiors matter to you, ask us about the superior beach-view apartments.

It’s a good fit for golfers who want a laid-back base by the sea with short drives to the course, and who care more about location and space than polish.
