Spring and Autumn Golf Holidays
Spring and autumn golf holidays with perfect playing conditions and great value. The smartest time to book a golf break.
Why Choose a Spring or Autumn Golf Holiday?
Ask most experienced golf travellers when the best time to go is and they won’t say summer. They’ll say spring or autumn. The weather in most popular destinations is warm without being oppressive, the courses are in excellent condition, and the prices are noticeably lower than peak season. You get quieter courses, easier tee time availability, and a more relaxed pace all round. It’s the sweet spot for golf travel, and once you’ve tried it, you’ll wonder why you ever booked in July or August.
Spring and autumn are what the travel industry calls shoulder season, and for golfers that translates into genuine advantages across the board. Hotels that charge a premium in summer often drop their rates by 20 to 30 percent either side of the peak months, and green fees follow a similar pattern. Flights tend to be cheaper too, particularly midweek, and the airports are less chaotic. You’re paying less for an experience that’s arguably better, which is a combination that doesn’t come along very often.
The playing conditions are often superior as well. In destinations like the Algarve, Spain and Turkey, the summer heat can make afternoon golf genuinely uncomfortable and courses can dry out and play firm and fast. In spring and autumn, temperatures are in the low to mid twenties, which is ideal for walking 18 holes without wilting. The turf tends to be in better shape too, with more colour on the fairways and greens that hold approach shots properly. If you care about course conditioning, shoulder season is when you’ll see most destinations at their best.
When Exactly Are We Talking?
The shoulder season window varies slightly depending on destination, but as a general guide you’re looking at March to May for spring and September to November for autumn. April tends to be the most popular spring month for golf travel, with warm temperatures across southern Europe and North Africa and plenty of daylight for a full round followed by an evening outdoors. October is the autumn equivalent, offering similar conditions with the added bonus of summer warmth lingering in the sea and the soil.
March and November sit at the edges and can be a bit more variable depending on where you go. The Canary Islands and Morocco are reliable year round, so both months work well there.

Why Shoulder Season Works So Well for Groups
If you’re organising a group or society trip, spring and autumn make the logistics significantly easier. Availability is better across the board, from tee times to hotel rooms to restaurant bookings for larger parties. Resorts are more willing to negotiate on group rates during quieter periods, and you’re more likely to secure consecutive tee times that keep your group together on the course. There’s also less competition for the popular courses, so you can often get on to layouts that would be fully booked during the summer. For the person doing the organising, everything is just a bit smoother when you’re not fighting peak season demand.

Frequently Asked Questions
In the most popular golf destinations, you’re looking at daytime temperatures of around 20 to 26 degrees in spring and autumn, which is ideal for golf. Mornings can be a touch cooler, particularly in March and November, but by mid morning it’s usually warm enough for short sleeves. Rain is possible but generally infrequent in southern Europe and North Africa during these months. We can advise on the best destination for your specific dates if you want the most reliable conditions.
Generally, yes, and often better than in peak summer. The heat of July and August can stress turf in southern European destinations, leading to dry fairways and firm greens. In spring and autumn, courses have more moisture, more colour and tend to play in the best condition of the year. Some courses do carry out maintenance during quieter periods, such as overseeding greens in autumn, so it’s worth checking before you book. We’ll always flag any known maintenance schedules so you’re not caught out.
It varies by destination, but savings of 20 to 30 percent on the overall package are common. Hotels and green fees both tend to drop, and flights are often significantly cheaper, especially midweek departures. Turkey and Morocco offer particularly strong value in the shoulder months, while the Algarve and Spain are noticeably more affordable in April, May, October and November compared to June through August. We’ll always show you the price difference if you’re flexible on dates so you can make an informed decision.
Both work well. A three or four night break in April or October is one of the best value golf trips you can take, particularly to destinations with short flight times like the Algarve, Costa del Sol or the Canary Islands. Equally, a full week during shoulder season gives you more rounds at lower cost and the chance to really settle into the trip. We can build a package around whatever length of stay suits you.
