Tangier has been drawing visitors for centuries. Sitting at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and the Spanish coast is visible across the Strait of Gibraltar on a clear day, it’s a city with a genuinely unusual character: international, historic, and increasingly well-served by quality hotels. Barceló Tanger arrived in 2022 and quickly established itself as one of the better options on the bay.

The hotel sits directly facing Tangier Beach, overlooking the marina, with views that take in the bay and stretch towards Gibraltar. It’s a high-rise property with a modern, unfussy feel. The 200 rooms and suites all come with balconies and free Wi-Fi. The premium sea view rooms on the upper floors are the ones worth requesting, with uninterrupted water views and a sense of the city’s geography that lower floors simply don’t offer.

For golf, the Royal Country Club de Tanger is around 10 minutes by road. Founded in 1914, it’s the oldest golf club in Morocco and the first ever established in the Mediterranean basin, a piece of history that is very much still in active, impressive use. Al Houara Golf Club, one of the top 5 ranked courses in Africa is also just 35 minute drive from the hotel.

The hotel’s location is consistently its most praised quality. Tangier Bay is directly in front, the old medina and Grand Socco are reachable on foot or in a short taxi, and the city’s beachfront promenade is right outside the door. It suits golf-focused visits and those wanting to spend time in the city equally well.

Why Stay at Barceló Tanger?

Tangier is not your conventional golf destination; its eccentricity is its appeal.The city is fascinating: one of the most cosmopolitan places in North Africa, shaped by centuries of European, Arab, and African influences. The medina, the souk, the beachfront restaurants, the art museums, and a food scene blending Moroccan, Spanish, and Mediterranean traditions make it a compelling base for a few days on either side of the golf, or for groups where not everyone is on the course. A few honest things worth knowing. Check-in can run slowly during busy summer periods. The hotel provides only one complimentary bottle of water on arrival, which some guests on longer stays have found frustrating. And if a quiet night is a priority, ask specifically for a room away from the lift and on the pool-facing side rather than the floors closest to the rooftop bar.

The Royal Country Club de Tanger, 10 minutes by road, anchors the golf case firmly. Founded in 1914 and declared a National Heritage Site in 2018, it is the oldest golf club in Morocco, the first in the entire Mediterranean basin, and the second oldest in Africa. Originally designed by British architects Cotton and Pennink, it was comprehensively renovated by Peter Harradine in 2001, who changed the direction of a quarter of the holes in the process. Playing through century-old cypress, pine, and eucalyptus trees in the foothills of the Rif Mountains, with views of Tangier’s rooftops and the Strait of Gibraltar from the 5th green, is an experience that goes well beyond the average resort round.
