Winter Sun Golf Holidays

Escape the cold with a winter sun golf holiday. Warm weather, great courses and guaranteed sunshine when you need it most.

Why Choose a Winter Sun Golf Holiday?

There comes a point every winter where you’ve had enough. The course is waterlogged, the daylight disappears by half three, and you haven’t played a proper round in weeks. A winter sun golf holiday fixes that. A few hours on a plane and you’re somewhere warm, dry and green, playing golf in a polo shirt while everyone back home is scraping ice off their windscreen. It’s not just good for your game, it’s good for your head. A bit of vitamin D and a few rounds of golf in the sunshine can reset the whole winter.

The beauty of winter sun golf is that you don’t have to go far to find it. Some of the best golf destinations in Europe and North Africa are warm enough to play comfortably right through the winter months, and flight times from the UK are rarely more than four or five hours. You’re not talking about a long haul expedition. A four night midweek break in January can be enough to shake off the cobwebs and come back feeling like you’ve actually had a holiday, even if you’ve only taken a couple of days off work.

It’s also worth knowing that winter is often the quieter season at many popular golf destinations. Courses that are packed in the summer months have plenty of availability through December, January and February, and prices tend to reflect that. You’ll often find better rates on hotels and green fees than you would in peak season, and the pace of play is more relaxed because there are fewer groups on the course. For golfers who don’t like waiting on every tee, winter sun trips can be a revelation.

Where to Go for Winter Sun Golf

The obvious choices are the ones that deliver reliable warmth and sunshine between November and March. The Canary Islands are probably the most dependable option from the UK. Tenerife and Gran Canaria both have strong course selections, temperatures sit comfortably in the low twenties through winter, and flights are around four hours from most UK airports. The Algarve is slightly cooler but still very pleasant for golf, and the courses are among the best in Europe. You might need a jumper first thing in the morning, but by mid morning you’ll have taken it off.

Morocco is another excellent winter sun destination. Marrakech and Agadir both offer warm, dry conditions through the winter with quality courses and genuinely affordable packages. Further afield, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah deliver guaranteed heat and wall to wall sunshine, with some of the most impressive resort golf in the world.

Getting the Timing Right

The sweet spot for winter sun golf depends on where you’re going. For the Canary Islands, Morocco, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah, any time from November through to March works well. The Algarve is best from late February onwards if you want the warmest weather, though it’s perfectly playable all winter. Turkey is ideal in November and from mid March, but December through February can be a bit cool for some. If you’re flexible on dates, we can help you find the window that gives you the best weather, the best availability and the best price for your chosen destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah are the warmest options, with daytime temperatures reliably around 25 to 28 degrees through the winter months. The Canary Islands sit around 20 to 23 degrees, which is ideal for golf without being too hot. Morocco varies by region but Marrakech and Agadir are generally in the low to mid twenties. The Algarve is the coolest of the popular options, typically around 15 to 18 degrees in midwinter, but it warms up nicely from February onwards. We can match you to the right destination based on how warm you want it.

For the most popular destinations and dates, particularly Christmas, New Year and half term weeks, it’s worth booking three to four months ahead to secure the best flights and hotel availability. For quieter periods in January or February, you can often book with shorter lead times and still get good options. That said, earlier booking usually means more choice and better prices, so if you know roughly when you want to travel, it’s worth getting in touch sooner rather than later.

Often they’re actually cheaper. Many popular golf destinations drop their hotel and green fee rates during the winter months because it’s outside the European peak season. The Canary Islands and Morocco in particular offer very good value through winter. Flights can be competitive too, especially if you travel midweek or book early. Dubai is the exception, as winter is its peak tourist season, but even there the packages represent good value given the standard of hotel and course on offer.

Short breaks work brilliantly for winter sun. A three or four night trip with two or three rounds is enough to get some sunshine and decent golf without using up all your annual leave. The Canary Islands, Algarve and Morocco are all well suited to shorter breaks because of the relatively short flight times. We can build a package around whatever length of trip works for you, whether that’s a long weekend or a full week.
