Christmas Golf Breaks

Christmas golf holidays in the sunshine. Swap the sofa for the fairway and spend the festive season somewhere warm.

Why Choose a Christmas Golf Holiday?

Not everyone wants to spend Christmas on the sofa watching reruns. If you’d rather be on a golf course in the sunshine with a cold drink waiting at the turn, a Christmas golf holiday might be exactly what you’re after. More and more golfers are choosing to spend the festive period somewhere warm, whether that’s a full two week break covering Christmas and New Year or a shorter trip over the bank holidays. It’s a chance to end the year doing something you actually enjoy, in weather that lets you do it properly.

The appeal is pretty obvious. In the UK, late December means short days, freezing temperatures and courses that are either closed or barely playable. Meanwhile, in destinations like the Canary Islands, Morocco, Dubai and parts of the Algarve, the sun is shining and the courses are open. You can play a round on Christmas morning, have lunch on a terrace overlooking the sea, and still be back at the hotel in time for a proper Christmas dinner. It’s a different kind of festive season, and the golfers who try it tend to come back year after year.

Christmas golf holidays also work well for families and couples who want to do something a bit different without losing the sense of occasion. Most of the hotels and resorts we work with put on special Christmas dinners, decorations and entertainment, so it still feels festive even if you’re 2,000 miles from home. You’re not missing Christmas. You’re just having it somewhere better, with golf included.

Where to Go for Christmas Golf

The Canary Islands are one of the most reliable Christmas golf destinations. Tenerife and Gran Canaria both offer temperatures around 20 to 22 degrees through December, with very little rain and enough courses to keep things varied across a week or two. The flight is around four hours, which is manageable even on Christmas Eve, and the islands have a good festive atmosphere with restaurants and hotels making an effort over the holiday period.

Morocco is warm and dry through December, with Marrakech and Agadir both sitting comfortably in the low twenties. It’s an affordable option for Christmas golf and the courses are in good condition at that time of year.

The Algarve is the closest option and still pleasant in December, though temperatures are cooler at around 15 to 17 degrees. It suits golfers who don’t mind a light layer and want a shorter flight with easy access to world class courses. Portugal does Christmas well too, with good food, local wines and a laid back festive atmosphere.

Booking a Christmas Golf Trip

Christmas is one of the busiest periods for golf travel, and the most popular destinations book up months in advance. Flights in particular can be expensive and limited if you leave it late, so early booking makes a real difference to both availability and price. If Christmas golf is something you’re thinking about, it’s worth getting in touch by the summer to lock in the best options. We can hold provisional bookings while you confirm details, so you’re not committing before you’re ready but you’re not losing out on availability either.

Frequently Asked Questions

Flights and accommodation over the Christmas period are typically more expensive than shoulder season, and some resorts apply festive supplements for gala dinners and special events. That said, green fees tend to stay fairly stable, and the overall cost depends heavily on the destination. Morocco and the Canary Islands offer good value even at Christmas, while Dubai sits at the higher end. Booking early is the single best way to keep costs down, particularly on flights where prices can climb steeply as December approaches. We’ll always be transparent about pricing and show you where the costs sit so you can make an informed decision.

In most destinations, yes. Courses in the Canary Islands, Morocco, Dubai and the Algarve are open on Christmas Day, though some operate reduced hours or close for the afternoon. Tee times on Christmas morning are popular and tend to book up early, so if a Christmas Day round is important to you, it’s worth confirming availability as part of your booking. We’ll make sure it’s arranged in advance so you’re not left hoping for a cancellation.

Most of the hotels and resorts we work with make a real effort over Christmas. You can expect a traditional Christmas dinner, often with a gala evening, decorations throughout the hotel, and entertainment or activities for families. Some resorts offer Christmas Day brunches, themed buffets or special poolside events. The level of celebration varies by destination and hotel, but we’ll let you know exactly what’s planned at your chosen resort so you know what to expect.

Absolutely. Many of the resorts we recommend for Christmas trips have kids’ clubs, family pools, beaches and entertainment that run right through the festive period. Children still get the excitement of Christmas Day with presents, a special dinner and decorations, just in much better weather. It can actually be a more relaxed way to do Christmas as a family because the resort handles the cooking, the entertainment and the clearing up. All you have to do is enjoy it.
