Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is a long-standing Algarve favourite, known for relaxed hospitality and one of Portugal’s most established championship courses. It’s a no-nonsense golf resort that blends traditional course design, reliable conditions and easy access to the coast, Faro Airport and nearby Portimão.
5 Star Resort

Key Information
Penina Hotel & Golf Resort sits just outside Portimão in the western Algarve and is best known for the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, the first championship course ever built in the region. Tree-lined, flat and open in places, it rewards solid driving and sensible course management rather than brute force. It’s a proper parkland test, with generous fairways, raised greens and water coming into play on several holes.
The resort has three courses in total: the 18-hole Championship Course, the 9-hole Resort Course and a shorter Academy Course, making it suitable for mixed-ability groups or those wanting a lighter round alongside the main event. The Championship Course has hosted the Portuguese Open multiple times, which gives it a bit of pedigree without feeling stuffy.
Accommodation is traditional and comfortable rather than flashy, with hotel rooms and villas spread across the grounds. Dining is relaxed and varied, with on-site restaurants covering everything from casual bites to sit-down meals. You’re close to Portimão, Lagos and some of the Algarve’s best beaches, so it’s easy to mix golf with evenings out or downtime by the coast.

Penina is best suited to golfers who appreciate classic layouts and consistent conditions. The Championship Course is fair but demanding, mid to low-handicappers will enjoy the challenge, while higher handicappers will find it playable with sensible tee selection. Service is friendly and low-key, with a calm, established atmosphere across the resort.
Having three courses on site adds flexibility, especially for longer stays or groups with different playing preferences. Practice facilities are solid, and the pace of play is generally good. The resort feels peaceful and green, despite being close to towns, beaches and the motorway, making it a convenient base for a golf holiday without feeling isolated.

For many golfers, Penina is about substance over flash. The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course carries real history, yet it plays friendly, fair, and thoughtfully modern. Three courses on site give you options, whether you want a full test, a shorter loop, or an easygoing warm up. The setting feels green and spacious, and you are close enough to beaches and town life without losing the peaceful resort feel. Add reliable conditions, approachable service, and a layout that rewards smart decisions, and it is easy to see why golfers return year after year for relaxed stays that still feel rooted in the game.
