Dona Filipa Hotel sits just outside Vale do Lobo, close to the Algarve coastline and a short drive from Faro Airport. It’s a traditional five-star hotel rather than a modern golf resort, which suits golfers who prefer understated comfort over flash. Rooms are spacious, well-kept, and many look out over the gardens or sea.

Golf is centred around San Lorenzo Golf Course, one of the Algarve’s standout tracks. Set within the Ria Formosa nature reserve, it’s flat enough to walk but demands accuracy. Pine-lined holes run alongside lagoons and marshland, with water in play on several closing holes. It’s visually impressive without being gimmicky, and conditions are usually excellent.

Back at the hotel, facilities include outdoor pools, a spa, and direct access to the beach. Dining is solid and varied, with Portuguese and Mediterranean options, plus easy access to Vale do Lobo’s bars and restaurants nearby. San Lorenzo is best suited to mid- to low-handicap golfers, though higher handicaps will still enjoy it if they’re comfortable playing strategically. Fairways are generous in places, but water and bunkering keep you switched on, especially on the back nine. Greens are typically fast and true.

Service at Dona Filipa is professional and low-key, with a loyal repeat-guest feel. There’s no golf course directly on site, but transfers to San Lorenzo and other nearby courses are straightforward and well organised. San Lorenzo has hosted the Portuguese Open multiple times, which says plenty about the layout. The overall atmosphere is calm, grown-up, and geared towards golfers who value quality over hype.

This year it’s was time to try Portugal...

This year it’s was time to try Portugal. What a fantastic trip we had, it was seamless from start to finish. A great hotel, lovely food and the service was second to none. The courses were amazing. All in all another fantastic golf tour. Now we need to decide on the venue for next year with the added bonus of knowing Phil will sort us out wherever we choose.
