Golf Breaks in West Algarve

The West Algarve is one of Portugal’s most rewarding golfing regions, combining excellent courses with dramatic Atlantic scenery. Across Carvoeiro, Lagos and Alvor, golfers can experience everything from clifftop championship layouts to quieter parkland courses surrounded by the region’s rugged natural landscape.

What makes the West Algarve stand out is its more relaxed character. The coastline is shaped by golden cliffs, sweeping beaches and secluded coves, while towns such as Lagos, Alvor and Carvoeiro offer plenty of restaurants, bars and traditional Portuguese charm. Golf is spread comfortably across the region, making it easy to combine different courses without spending too much time travelling.

There is something for everyone in terms of accommodation in the Western Algarve . The area has everything from five-star resort hotels with golf and spa facilities to comfortable aparthotels that work particularly well for groups. Self-catering villas with pools are also widely available, giving families and larger parties more space and flexibility between rounds.

Geographically, the West Algarve has several distinct golfing pockets. Carvoeiro provides easy access to courses including Gramacho, Vale da Pinta and Vale de Milho, while nearby resorts offer golf and accommodation in one convenient setting. Around Lagos, golfers can play dramatic layouts such as Palmares and Boavista, with the coastline providing some of the region’s most memorable views. Alvor sits between the two, offering a lively base with beaches, restaurants and bars alongside easy access to courses across the western Algarve.

Faro Airport is the main gateway to the region, with direct flights from most UK and major European cities taking around two and a half to three hours. Carvoeiro and Alvor are generally around an hour from the airport, with Lagos slightly further west, making the entire area easily accessible for a golf trip.

Best Golf Holiday Destinations in West Algarve

West Algarve packages work particularly well for groups of friends, couples and serious golfers looking to combine quality courses with a more relaxed coastal setting. Carvoeiro, Lagos and Alvor each offer something slightly different, while remaining close enough to combine within the same trip. Lagos is ideal for golfers wanting dramatic courses and a lively town, Carvoeiro combines beaches and restaurants with excellent nearby golf, while Alvor provides a relaxed base with easy access across the region.

Beyond the courses, the West Algarve has plenty to offer. The landscape is genuinely spectacular, with limestone cliffs, wide Atlantic beaches and secluded coves defining much of the coastline. Courses such as Palmares make excellent use of the natural surroundings, while the further west you travel towards Sagres, the scenery becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic.

The food and drink culture is an underrated part of any West Algarve golf trip. Fresh seafood features heavily on local menus, alongside traditional Portuguese dishes, regional wines and plenty of relaxed bars and restaurants. Lagos, Alvor and Carvoeiro all have lively but easy-going centres, making it simple to find somewhere for dinner and drinks after a round.

For groups travelling with non-golfers, the West Algarve is an easy choice. The beaches are outstanding, while boat trips, coastal walks, watersports and historic towns provide plenty to do away from the courses. It’s a destination that works for different types of traveller without the golf having to dominate the entire trip.

Best time to play golf in West Algarve

The West Algarve offers excellent golf conditions for much of the year, but spring and autumn are the standout seasons. From mid-March through May, temperatures are typically comfortable for golf, the courses around Lagos, Alvor and Carvoeiro are in great condition, and the busiest summer crowds have yet to arrive.

October and November are equally popular. The intense summer heat has passed, temperatures remain pleasantly warm, and conditions are ideal for playing courses such as Palmares, Penina and the Pestana layouts around Carvoeiro. Hotel and golf rates can also be more attractive than during the peak summer months, making autumn a particularly popular time for UK golfers.

Absolutely. While there are challenging championship layouts, the West Algarve offers courses suitable for a wide range of handicaps. Multiple tee options and resort-style courses make the region accessible for less experienced golfers, while stronger players still have plenty of demanding layouts to choose from.

Golf Holiday Facts

Golf tourism is estimated to contribute over 500 million euros annually to the Algarve regional economy.

The economic weight of golf in the Algarve is substantial. Golf visitors spend significantly more per day than standard beach tourists, with combined expenditure on accommodation, green fees, dining and ancillary activities placing them among the highest-value traveller segments in the region.(1)

The Algarve receives approximately 300 days of sunshine per year, supporting a genuinely viable year-round golf season.

Unlike many northern European golf destinations that effectively close down from October through March, the Algarve maintains playable conditions across all twelve months. Average temperatures range from a winter low of around 12 degrees Celsius in January to a summer high approaching 36 degrees in July and August.(2)

Faro Airport handled approximately 10 million passengers in 2023, with golf-related tourism among the key drivers of leisure traffic.

The scale of air access into Faro is a meaningful competitive advantage for the Algarve as a golf destination. The airport’s connectivity to the UK and northern Europe, combined with relatively short flight times and strong competition among budget and full-service carriers, keeps airfare accessible for a broad range of travellers.(3)
