Pinhal Vilamoura

A classic parkland test threaded through umbrella pines on Portugal‘s Algarve coast. Originally laid out by Frank Pennink in 1976 and later refined by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Pinhal rewards thinking golfers who can shape a ball, find fairways and live with small, well-guarded greens.

Pinhal Vilamoura: Pines, Precision and Pedigree

Pinhal is the second-oldest course in the Vilamoura complex, opening in 1976 to a Frank Pennink design before Robert Trent Jones Sr. came in to refine it in 1985 – a rare meeting of British and American architectural styles on the same layout. Martin Hawtree has since reworked the 5th, 12th, 15th and 16th. The result is a par 72 measuring around 6,350 metres, draped over gently rolling parkland with umbrella and Atlantic pines lining almost every fairway. It’s not a course that beats you up with water – a stream and a few small ponds appear here and there – but the trees and the small, sloping greens demand accuracy off the tee and a sharp short game. The opening stretch is honest about its intentions: two stout par fours and a pair of long par fives in the first four holes will test you before you’ve settled. The par-three 8th, played across water to a two-tiered green ringed by four bunkers, is one of the better short holes in Vilamoura. The back nine opens out a touch, with sea glimpses and a quirky 11th – a sharp dogleg par four that bends 90 degrees left. Conditioning is generally good, the pace tends to be steady rather than rushed, and as part of the Dom Pedro Golf stable (alongside the Old Course, Millennium and Laguna), it sits comfortably in any Vilamoura itinerary as the strategic, thinking man’s round.

Key Information

Expect a proper test of ball-striking rather than a slog. Fairways are generous enough off the tee but the pines crowd in quickly, so straight is better than long here. Greens are on the small side and tend to run true, which puts the emphasis on your iron play and distance control. The terrain undulates rather than climbs, so walking is perfectly doable for reasonably fit players, though most opt for a buggy in the summer heat.

You’ll see a fair mix on the course – mid-handicap visitors on golf breaks, locals, and the occasional society – and pace can drift on busy mornings, so an early tee time is worth booking. It suits players who like working the ball and reading subtle slopes. Beginners may find the tree-lined corridors punishing.

Why Play at Pinhal Vilamoura?

Pinhal has a different feel from some of Vilamoura’s bigger name layouts. It’s quieter, more thoughtful, and built around placement rather than spectacle. Many golfers return because the course asks questions on every hole without feeling unfair. You’ll notice the mix of design influences too, Pennink’s classic parkland character alongside Trent Jones Sr.’s sharper strategic touches. The tree lined fairways give the course a mature, established atmosphere that feels a world away from newer resort layouts.

There’s enough variety to keep better players engaged, but it still works well as part of a relaxed Algarve golf trip with friends. Scroll up to explore the latest golf packages and deals above.
