Millennium Vilamoura

Designed by Martin Hawtree and opened in 2000, Millennium is the most playable of Vilamoura‘s five courses – a parkland layout that mixes open, generous fairways with a tighter stretch through umbrella pines, and finishes with two water-guarded greens that ask for a level head rather than heroics.

Vilamoura's Easy-Going Parkland Round

Millennium sits alongside the Old Course, Pinhal, and Laguna in the Vilamoura Collection (formerly Dom Pedro), and it’s the layout most visitors come away talking about. Martin Hawtree built it in 2000 by refurbishing nine holes from the former 27-hole Laguna course and adding a brand-new nine. The result is a par 72 measuring 6,176 metres off the back tees with a slope of 125 – long enough to test a low handicapper, but rarely cruel.

The front nine eases you in over open ground before holes 3 to 7 narrow sharply through stands of pines, a stretch reminiscent of Pinhal or the Old Course next door. Accuracy matters here. The standout is the par-3 6th, where a lake guards the left side of the green and a big bunker sits to the right – one of the most photographed shots in Vilamoura. The back nine opens up again, but Hawtree saved the drama for last: lakes guard both the 17th and 18th greens, where a simple strategy is always the best approach.

Conditioning is generally strong year-round – greens run true and fairways hold up well through the cooler months – and pace tends to sit around four to four and a half hours, occasionally longer in peak season. As a Vilamoura all-rounder, it’s a smart first day of a trip: gettable, varied and built for fun.

Key Information

The terrain is largely flat, which makes Millennium one of the easier Vilamoura courses to walk – but the green-to-tee transitions are long, and most visitors prefer a buggy, especially in summer. The atmosphere is relaxed rather than stuffy, the staff get consistently good reviews, and the clubhouse shared with Laguna has a terrace overlooking the closing holes — a fine spot for a cold drink after the round. Greens roll true, fairways are generous on the open holes and tighter through the trees, and the back nine offers real scoring chances if you keep the ball in front of you. It suits mixed-ability fourballs, golfing couples and mid-handicappers easing into a Portugal trip, while low handicappers will still find a fair test from the back tees.

Why Play at Millennium Vilamoura?

For many golfers, Millennium strikes the right balance between challenge and enjoyment. It has enough variety to stay interesting all week, yet it never feels punishing unless you force the issue around the lakes or through the tighter pine corridors. The routing changes character nicely from open resort golf to more tactical tree lined holes, which keeps the round engaging from start to finish. Many guests love playing it early in a Vilamoura trip because it settles you into the rhythm of golf in the Algarve without wearing you out. Add in reliable conditioning, approachable setup options and a welcoming atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why players return year after year.
