Frank Pennink’s 1969 parkland masterpiece weaves through towering umbrella pines just twenty minutes from Faro. Long considered the Grande Dame of Algarve golf, the Old Course rewards thoughtful play over raw power, with a recent clubhouse refresh adding modern polish to one of Portugal‘s most enduring layouts.
Championship Golf

Key Information
Frank Pennink designed the Old Course with British inland golf in mind, and you can feel it from the first tee. Opened in 1969, it’s the second oldest course in the Algarve and the senior member of the Dom Pedro Golf collection, which also includes Victoria, Pinhal, Laguna and Millennium. Hawtree & Sons handled a substantial renovation in the late 1990s, modernising the irrigation and refining the greens without losing the original character.
Routing is the star here: 18 holes weaving through mature umbrella pines, with five par 5s across a par-73 layout that stretches to 6,254 metres from the championship tees. There’s genuine variety – short risk-reward par 4s, demanding doglegs and four par 3s that are easily the most memorable holes on the property. The 4th is the standout: a 163-metre tee shot played from an elevated tee, over a small lake, with a lone umbrella pine guarding the line into an elevated green. Club selection is everything.
Conditioning is consistently excellent. Fairways are tight and tree-lined, greens are small (especially on the par 3s), and the bunkering punishes wayward strikes. Tee intervals were widened to 12 minutes recently, which has visibly tightened up pace of play. The clubhouse reopened after a full renovation with a British-style gastropub and a TrackMan-equipped range. As the headline course in Vilamoura, it’s the one most visitors plan their trip around – and it justifies the billing.

The Old Course feels traditional rather than tricked-up. Fairways are tight and pine-lined, so straight driving matters more than distance, and small greens demand sharp iron play. The terrain rolls more than you’d expect in the Algarve, with enough elevation change that most groups take a buggy – though it’s perfectly walkable if you fancy stretching the legs.
Conditioning is reliably first class: greens roll true, bunkers are well-kept, and pace tends to hold up thanks to wider tee intervals and on-course marshals. It suits low and mid-handicappers best, but mixed-ability groups will get on fine – the front nine eases you in before the back sharpens its teeth. Expect a busy tee sheet and book well ahead.

For many golfers visiting the Algarve, this is the course they build the trip around. The Old Course blends classic parkland design with a setting that feels unmistakably Portuguese, towering pines, warm light, and just enough challenge to keep every round interesting. You’ll find memorable holes throughout, especially the par 3s, which ask for committed swings rather than brute force. The recent clubhouse renovation and upgraded practice facilities give the whole property a polished, modern edge without losing its traditional identity. It’s easy to see why repeat visitors keep coming back year after year.
