A genuine change of pace from its tree-lined Algarve neighbours, Laguna sits on low-lying coastal terrain with a distinctly links-like feel. Generous water hazards come into play on 11 holes and 79 bunkers wait for anything off-line – the kind of round where strategy beats brute force.

Key Information
The Laguna course is one of five layouts in the Vilamoura Golf colleciton, on Portugal‘s central Algarve coast. Designed by the late American architect Joseph Lee and opened in 1990, it was originally part of the 27-hole Vilamoura III layout before nine holes were carved off to form the Millennium course. The result is a standalone 18-hole test with its own character. It plays to a par 72 over 6,121 metres from the white tees and shares a clubhouse, driving range and putting facilities with Millennium next door – handy if you fancy a 36-hole day.
The layout is flat, open and exposed, with few trees and plenty of lateral water giving it a strong links accent that sets it apart from the other Vilamoura tracks. Tee shots are relatively forgiving thanks to wide fairways, but holes 11 and 12 require careful play around and over the lakes, and the par-5 15th is widely regarded as the most memorable hole on the property – water everywhere and a real decision to make on the second shot. Wind frequently blows across this exposed location, which can transform the scorecard in either direction.
Conditioning is generally good, particularly through spring and autumn. Pace can stretch out in peak season – five-hour rounds aren’t unheard of – but on a quieter morning you’ll move along nicely. As part of the wider Dom Pedro setup, it’s a sensible inclusion in any multi-course Vilamoura trip, especially as an afternoon round.

Walking onto the first tee, the first thing you notice is how much sky there is. Without the umbrella of pines you get on the Old or Pinhal, Laguna feels properly open – and on a breezy day, that breeze is doing real work on your ball. The fairways are wide enough to swing freely, the greens are large and receptive, and the lakes are obvious rather than hidden, so it’s a thinking golfer’s course rather than a punishing one.
It suits mid-handicappers down to a tee, and it’s a sociable round for mixed groups where not everyone wants their lunch handed to them. Low handicappers will still find their game tested when the wind picks up. The course is very walkable, though most visitors opt for a buggy.

Golfers choose Laguna for its relaxed Vilamoura setting and a style of golf that feels different from the resort’s tree lined classics. It’s open, bright and spacious, with room to play, but never careless. The lakes bring character, the wind adds bite, and the 15th is the sort of par 5 you’ll talk about afterward. It also works beautifully as part of a multi course golf vacation, especially with Millennium next door and shared practice facilities close by. For groups, couples and repeat Algarve travelers, it’s a smart, enjoyable round with plenty of personality.
