Key Information
Stoke by Nayland is a well-established golf resort set in rolling countryside, best known for its two championship courses: the Constable and the Gainsborough. Both are modern parkland layouts with plenty of space off the tee, big greens and wide views across the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s enjoyable golf rather than punishing, but you’ll still need to think your way around, especially when the wind gets up.
The Constable Course is the more challenging of the two, with longer holes and more testing approaches. The Gainsborough is slightly shorter and more forgiving, making it a good balance if you’re playing multiple rounds. Course conditioning is usually reliable year-round, with good drainage helping after wet weather.
The hotel is attached to the clubhouse, so everything is close and easy. Rooms are modern and comfortable rather than flashy, and the spa is a popular extra for non-golfers or post-round recovery. Dining is relaxed, with a main restaurant and bar that’s ideal for a casual evening rather than a dress-up affair. You’re about 20 minutes from Colchester and just over an hour from London, making it a convenient option for short UK golf breaks without the long drive.

Stoke by Nayland suits mid- to low-handicap golfers but remains playable for higher handicaps thanks to generous fairways and sensible course design. Expect good greens, open landscapes and a calm, friendly atmosphere rather than a high-pressure resort feel. Service is straightforward and welcoming, and everything runs efficiently without fuss.
There are two courses on site, which makes it ideal for 36-hole stays or mixed-ability groups. The resort has also hosted European Tour Qualifying School events in the past, giving it a bit of competitive pedigree without feeling intimidating. Overall, it’s relaxed, practical and dependable which is ideal for golfers who value good courses, comfort and easy logistics.

For many golfers, Stoke by Nayland hits that sweet spot between quality golf and an easygoing stay. You’ve got two strong courses right outside the hotel door, each offering a different feel, which keeps a short break from feeling repetitive. The setting is quietly impressive too, open views, big skies, and a sense of space that lets you relax into your round. It’s competitive enough to keep low handicaps engaged, yet forgiving enough that higher handicaps can still enjoy themselves. Add in comfortable rooms, a welcoming clubhouse vibe, and straightforward service, and it’s easy to settle in here.
