Golf Breaks in East Algarve. The best East Algarve deals, courses & packages

Golf Breaks in East Algarve

The East Algarve is one of Portugal’s most relaxed and rewarding golfing regions, combining excellent courses with a quieter, more traditional side of the Algarve. Across Tavira and Faro, golfers can experience everything from world-class championship layouts to scenic resort courses.  The coastline, Ria Formosa and rolling countryside provide a distinctive backdrop that not many other places can match.

What makes the East Algarve stand out is its peaceful and authentic character. The coastline is shaped by long sandy beaches, islands and the Ria Formosa Natural Park, while Tavira offers cobbled streets and traditional Portuguese charm and Faro combines a historic old town with a lively marina, restaurants and bars. It is a great option for golfers who want quality courses without the busier resort atmosphere found further west.

There is something for everyone in terms of accommodation in the Eastern Algarve. The area has everything from luxury golf resorts and stylish hotels to comfortable coastal accommodation that works particularly well for groups. Tavira provides a relaxed base close to several courses, while Faro offers a wider choice of restaurants, nightlife and easy access to both the coast and surrounding golf.

Geographically, the East Algarve has two excellent bases. Tavira provides easy access to courses including Benamor, Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima, with Monte Rei also within reach for a standout championship round. Faro is particularly convenient for golfers looking to explore the wider eastern and central Algarve, with courses around Quinta do Lago and the Ria Formosa coastline easily accessible.

Faro Airport is the main gateway to the region, with direct flights from most UK and major European cities taking around two and a half to three hours. Faro itself is just minutes from the airport, while Tavira is generally around 30–40 minutes away, making the East Algarve one of the most accessible choices for a golf trip to Portugal.

Best Golf Holiday Destinations in East Algarve

East Algarve packages work particularly well for couples, groups of friends and golfers looking for a quieter Portuguese experience without compromising on course quality. Tavira and Faro provide two very different bases within the region. Tavira is ideal for a slower-paced stay with excellent golf nearby, while Faro combines historic character, restaurants and nightlife with convenient access to courses across the eastern Algarve.

Beyond the courses, the East Algarve has plenty to offer. The landscape is noticeably different from the western Algarve, with the islands, lagoons and salt marshes of the Ria Formosa replacing the dramatic cliffs found further west. Long sandy beaches and quieter stretches of coastline give the region a more peaceful and traditional feel.

The food and drink culture is a major part of any East Algarve golf trip. Fresh fish and seafood feature heavily on local menus, alongside traditional Portuguese dishes, regional wines and relaxed waterfront restaurants. Tavira is particularly well suited to laid-back evenings, while Faro offers a livelier selection of restaurants, cafés and bars around its old town and marina.

For groups travelling with non-golfers, the East Algarve is an excellent choice. The beaches and islands of the Ria Formosa are a major attraction, while boat trips, historic towns, local markets and waterfront restaurants provide plenty to enjoy away from the fairways. It’s a great option for travellers who want quality golf combined with a quieter and more authentic side of the Algarve.

Best time to play golf in East Algarve

The East Algarve offers excellent golf conditions for much of the year, with spring and autumn providing some of the best conditions. From mid-March through May, temperatures are comfortable, courses around Tavira and Faro are in excellent shape, and the region remains relatively peaceful before the busiest summer months arrive.

October and November are also particularly popular with golfers. Temperatures remain pleasantly warm without the stronger summer heat, creating ideal conditions for courses such as Monte Rei, Quinta da Ria, Quinta de Cima and Benamor. Hotel and golf rates can also become more attractive, making autumn a great time for UK golfers to experience the quieter side of the Algarve.

Golf Holiday Facts

Golf tourism is estimated to contribute over 500 million euros annually to the Algarve regional economy.

The economic weight of golf in the Algarve is substantial. Golf visitors spend significantly more per day than standard beach tourists, with combined expenditure on accommodation, green fees, dining and ancillary activities placing them among the highest-value traveller segments in the region.(1)

The Algarve receives approximately 300 days of sunshine per year, supporting a genuinely viable year-round golf season.

Unlike many northern European golf destinations that effectively close down from October through March, the Algarve maintains playable conditions across all twelve months. Average temperatures range from a winter low of around 12 degrees Celsius in January to a summer high approaching 36 degrees in July and August.(2)

Faro Airport handled approximately 10 million passengers in 2023, with golf-related tourism among the key drivers of leisure traffic.

The scale of air access into Faro is a meaningful competitive advantage for the Algarve as a golf destination. The airport’s connectivity to the UK and northern Europe, combined with relatively short flight times and strong competition among budget and full-service carriers, keeps airfare accessible for a broad range of travellers.(3)
