The Algarve has long been Europe’s go-to golf destination, and Faro is the gateway that makes it all possible. Fly direct from most UK airports in around two and a half hours, and within thirty minutes you can be checking into a golf hotel with fairway views and a cold beer in hand.
The area spans a wide range of accommodation styles. You’ll find everything from five-star resort hotels in Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo to comfortable aparthotels and self-catering villas in quieter spots like Quinta do Lago and Almancil. Budget-conscious travellers aren’t forgotten either, with plenty of well-located three-star options that still offer quick access to the region’s best courses.
The key sub-destinations within easy reach of Faro include Vilamoura, which is probably the most famous golf hub on the Iberian Peninsula, along with Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago, Carvoeiro, Albufeira and the quieter eastern Algarve stretching towards Tavira. Each has its own personality. Vilamoura draws golfers who want the full resort experience. Quinta do Lago appeals to those looking for something more exclusive. Albufeira is popular with families and groups wanting variety beyond the golf course.

Best Golf Holiday Destinations in Faro
Whether you’re organising a solo trip, a group society outing, a couples break or a full family holiday, the region around Faro offers more variety than almost anywhere else in European golf. Packages range from budget-friendly stays in Albufeira with access to mid-range courses to genuinely luxurious five-night itineraries combining rounds at Quinta do Lago South, Vale do Lobo Royal and Vilamoura Old Course with accommodation at one of the Algarve’s top resort hotels. The eastern Algarve, often overlooked, is increasingly popular with golfers who prefer quieter courses and a more authentic local atmosphere. The western stretches toward Lagos and Silves suit those who want dramatic scenery alongside quality golf. There’s a combination here for every type of traveller, which is exactly why the Algarve has held onto its reputation as Europe’s premier golf destination for the better part of four decades.
What separates a golf trip to the Faro region from just about anywhere else in Europe is the way everything comes together beyond the course itself. The landscape shifts from dramatic Atlantic cliff edges at Penina and Sagres in the west to the warm, shallow lagoons of the Ria Formosa nature park stretching east from Faro towards Tavira. It’s a genuinely beautiful part of the world, and that beauty seeps into the whole experience of being here.
The food is a serious draw. Fresh seafood is everywhere, the local wines from the Alentejo and Douro regions are outstanding, and the Portuguese culture around dining, which is unhurried, generous and sociable, suits golfers down to the ground. Evenings in Vilamoura Marina are particularly good, with a wide choice of restaurants and a lively but not overwhelming atmosphere.
For golfers travelling with non-golfing partners or family, the Algarve works brilliantly. Beach options are exceptional, from the sheltered family beaches around Albufeira to the wilder, emptier stretches near Sagres. The old town of Faro itself is well worth an afternoon, with its walled historic centre, charming cathedral square and some genuinely excellent local restaurants just a short cab ride from the main resort areas.
Water parks, boat trips across the lagoon, dolphin watching, cycling and the popular Slide and Splash attraction near Lagoa give families plenty to work with on non-golf days.

Madeira
Madeira sits out in the Atlantic and delivers one of Europe’s most scenic golf getaways. It’s a smaller island destination, but the golf feels special—dramatic elevation changes, sweeping ocean views, and a relaxed pace that suits a proper break. You’ve got two standout courses to build a trip around, plus Funchal’s restaurants, fresh seafood, and mountain scenery for the days you’re not playing.

Cascais
Cascais is a refined Atlantic golf destination just west of Lisbon, offering a strong cluster of championship courses set among pine forests, dunes and coastal cliffs. Golf here is varied and well conditioned, with layouts that reward strategy and cope well with ocean breezes. Top 10 Golf Courses in Faro
From championship layouts to hidden gems, these are the courses every golfer should have on their list when planning a golf holiday in Faro.
The “crown jewel” of the region, this course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times and was recently crowned “Europe’s Best Golf Course” (2023). It is a strategic masterpiece featuring umbrella pines and cork oaks, with many holes overlooking the Ria Formosa National Park. For a truly regal stay, the Conrad Algarve offers ultra-luxury rooms, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and an infinity pool that has become a landmark of the Golden Triangle.
Redesigned in 2014 by Beau Welling and Paul McGinley, the North Course is known for its playability and impeccable conditioning. It features large, undulating greens and four sets of tees to accommodate all skill levels, all while winding through the prestigious Quinta do Lago estate. A perfect lodging choice is the Wyndham Grand Algarve, an all-suite hotel located in the heart of the resort that provides spacious accommodations and excellent golf-focused amenities.
Home to the most photographed hole in Europe—the par-3 16th, which requires a long carry over orange-red sandstone cliffs—this course is a high-drama blend of parkland and coastal golf. It is a must-play for any visitor to the Faro area. The Vale do Lobo Resort offers a variety of luxury villas and apartments, putting you right in the centre of one of the Algarve’s most sophisticated lifestyle and golf communities.
This is a 27-hole championship complex divided into three distinct loops: The Pines, The Corks, and The Olives. It is known for its technical difficulty, particularly “The Corks” loop, and its excellent practice facilities. Stay at the Vilar do Golf, a family-friendly resort on the Quinta do Lago estate that offers spacious apartments and a central location for exploring the neighbouring golf courses.
Located about 30 minutes east of Faro, Quinta de Cima is a championship course designed to test the pros, featuring many dog-legs and well-placed bunkers. It is often less crowded than the central Algarve courses, offering a peaceful, high-quality round. For a luxurious base in the East, the Monte Rei Golf & Country Club offers incredible villa accommodations and is widely considered the best overall resort experience in the country.
Regularly cited as one of the most beautiful courses in the world, San Lorenzo is a scenic showpiece set within the saltwater marshes and freshwater lagoons of the Ria Formosa. The layout is technical and demanding, culminating in a spectacular finish along the ocean’s edge. To ensure access to this exclusive course, stay at the Dona Filipa Hotel, a classic 5-star property that owns the course and offers a dedicated shuttle service to the first tee.
Originally an orange grove, Laranjal is the newest of the Quinta do Lago courses and is famous for its fast, high-quality Penn A4 greens. The terrain is more open than its siblings but is guarded by five beautiful lakes and narrow fairways. Stay at the The Magnolia Hotel, a chic, Palm Springs-inspired boutique hotel that offers a more social, laid-back atmosphere with easy access to all three of the resort’s championship courses.
While the Royal Course gets the fame, many purists prefer the Ocean Course for its sheer beauty and proximity to the Atlantic. The fairways lead gently down to the shores, offering sweeping views of the sea as you navigate the undulating terrain. A great nearby stay is the Ria Park Hotel & Spa, an elegant property located between Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago that offers a tranquil garden setting and a fantastic wellness centre.
Designed by Donald Steel, Vila Sol is a 27-hole championship layout that has twice hosted the Portuguese Open. It has a traditional parkland feel with dense pine trees and narrow fairways that reward accuracy over raw power. The best way to experience it is by staying on-site at the Pestana Vila Sol Premium Golf & Spa Resort, where you can enjoy a seamless “stay and play” experience just 15 minutes from Faro.
The newest addition to the Faro region, Ombria is a sustainable, “eco” course set in the lush, hilly interior north of the city. It follows the natural topography, featuring ancient trees and a small river that meanders through the layout. You should stay on-site at the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, a 5-star resort designed like a traditional hilltop village that offers a peaceful, upscale alternative to the coastal resorts.
Best time to play golf in Faro
The Algarve’s climate is one of its biggest selling points, and Faro benefits from some of the most reliable sunshine in Europe. Summers are long and hot, with July and August regularly hitting 35 degrees or above, which can make afternoon golf genuinely uncomfortable, though early morning tee times help considerably. The most popular months for UK golfers are April, May, September and October, when temperatures settle in the comfortable 22 to 28 degree range, courses are in excellent condition and the crowds thin out compared to the peak summer rush. Spring brings a lovely freshness to the landscape, with wildflowers across the rough and fairways that have recovered beautifully from the winter rains. Autumn is arguably even better, with warm evenings, softer light and some of the best value hotel rates of the year. Winter golf is genuinely viable here too.
December and January temperatures rarely drop below 12 to 14 degrees, and while you’ll encounter some rain, the Algarve’s winter precipitation is typically short-lived. Green fee pricing tends to be at its lowest from November through to late February, making a winter Faro trip an attractive option for those flexible with timing.

Golf Holiday Facts
The Algarve is home to over 40 championship golf courses within roughly 150 kilometres of coastline.
That density of quality golf is almost unmatched anywhere in Europe outside of Scotland’s more spread-out links corridor. The majority of these courses sit within thirty to fifty minutes of Faro Airport, making the logistics of a multi-course trip genuinely straightforward. (1)
Golf tourism accounts for an estimated 15 to 20 per cent of total tourism revenue in the Algarve region, representing hundreds of millions of euros annually.
Portugal as a whole has developed one of the most commercially significant golf tourism economies in Europe, and the Algarve is its engine. The sector supports a substantial number of jobs across course operations, hotel and resort management, equipment hire, catering and transport. During peak golf season, from March through to May and again from September through to November, many Algarve hotels report golf-related bookings making up the majority of their occupancy.(2)
Faro Airport handled over 13 million passengers in 2023, with UK travellers representing the single largest national group.
That volume of passenger traffic has helped to sustain a wide network of direct UK routes, including year-round services from several major airports and additional seasonal capacity added through the spring and autumn golf travel peaks. The volume of UK arrivals is a direct reflection of how embedded the Algarve is within British golf travel culture.(3)
