Troia Golf

Set on a narrow sand spit between the Atlantic and the Sado Estuary, Troia is a raw, natural Robert Trent Jones Sr. layout. It has flat, pine-lined fairways, a lot of bunkers and some of the smallest greens you’ll find. It suits golfers who like to think their way round, and it returns from renovation in 2027.

Key Information

Sand, Pines and Small Greens on Troia

Troia opened in 1980 and has been ranked as high as 25th in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses in Europe. It sits on the Troia Peninsula, a 13km sand spit between the Atlantic and the Sado Estuary. You get there by a short car ferry from Setúbal. Robert Trent Jones Sr. built a par 72 that measures just under 6,920 yards from the back tees. That’s modest by modern standards, but distance was never the test here. The test is sand. Sand lines the whole course, and the greens are small, narrow and heavily guarded, sometimes by very large bunkers.

The opening holes show you what you’re in for. The 1st carries a lake from the back tee, and its green is bunkered so tightly that even long hitters struggle to reach it in two. The 2nd is a par 3 with the green on the edge of the beach. Trent Jones counted the 3rd, a sea-view par 4, among the best holes he ever designed. The round ends with the 18th, a par 5 that doglegs left to a raised green with three bunkers in front of it.

Key Information

The ground is flat and sandy. Small pine woods, coastal grasses and wildflowers press in on fairways that are already narrow. It’s easy walking, and there are no big climbs anywhere. The difficulty starts once you’re on the fairway. One visiting reviewer said he couldn’t recall another course with so many bunkers in front of its greens. Most approach shots have to carry the sand and land on a small target. Running the ball onto the green is rarely an option.

The wind matters too. Being on an exposed peninsula, Troia often gets an Atlantic breeze, usually stronger in the afternoon. A 400-yard par 4 can play very differently from one day to the next. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit. Winters are mild and summers are hot and dry, which firms up the fairways and gives you more roll.

Key numbers from the back tees:

  • 1st: a 517-yard par 5 played over a lake
  • 2nd: a 203-yard par 3 by the beach
  • 4th: the shortest hole on the course at 154 yards
  • 7th: the longest hole at 563 yards

Why Play Troia Golf?

Troia is unlike most golf in Portugal. One UK reviewer compared it to Australia’s sand belt, and that’s a fair description. There are no water features added for show and no big elevation changes. The challenge comes from sand, pines and a natural layout that Trent Jones left largely as he found it. A regular visitor noted that no two holes are alike and that several of the closing holes are especially strong. Strategy and accuracy matter much more here than distance off the tee.
