The Anchor Troia

A relaxed, apartment-style hotel on the Tróia Peninsula, a couple of minutes’ walk from the beach and a short drive from Troia Golf. Spacious rooms with kitchenettes and balconies make it a practical, comfortable base for golfers who like a bit of room to spread out between rounds.

Key Information

Space, Sea Air and Troia Golf on the Doorstep

The Anchor Troia sits on the Tróia Peninsula, the narrow strip of sand between the Sado estuary and the Atlantic, around an hour and a half south of Lisbon. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, you may know it by its old one: until recently it traded as Aqualuz Troia by The Editory. The hotel is split across two buildings, The Anchor Sea and The Anchor River, both just a couple of minutes on foot from Tróia Beach, the marina and the casino.

This isn’t a boutique bolthole or a five-star retreat. It’s an aparthotel at heart, and that’s where its strengths lie. Instead of standard doubles you get studios and suites with kitchenettes, private balconies and air conditioning, and many look out over the sea, the river or the Arrábida hills across the water. If you’re a group sharing apartments, or you simply like more space than a typical hotel room, it works well.

For golfers, the big draw is Troia Golf, the Robert Trent Jones Sr. layout that’s long been rated among Portugal’s best, about two kilometres away. That’s a three-minute drive, so you can be on the first tee without much of a morning.

Key Information

Expect an easy-going, practical stay. Rooms are set up more like small apartments than hotel rooms, with a kitchenette, fridge, hob, safe and desk, plus a balcony to sit out on. The Sea building has 113 units and the River building has 123 spread over 13 floors, so higher rooms come with wide views across the estuary and peninsula.

Service is relaxed and friendly, with multilingual staff who can help book tours and tickets. Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 11am. If you’re arriving on a morning flight, plan a round or lunch first, or ask about early check-in in advance.

Getting there: Lisbon Airport is roughly 90 minutes by car. Most people drive south to Setúbal and take the ferry across the Sado, which is a pleasant way to arrive. There’s no airport shuttle, so a hire car or transfer is the way to go. Parking isn’t free, so factor that in if you’re driving.

Distances:

  • Tróia Beach: around 3 minutes’ walk
  • Casino de Tróia and the marina: under 5 minutes’ walk
  • Troia Golf: about 2km, a 3-minute drive
  • Comporta Beach: about 8km
  • Lisbon Airport: around 90 minutes by road

Why Stay at The Anchor Troia?

The simple answer is space and location. Few hotels on the peninsula put you this close to both the beach and one of Portugal’s most respected courses. The apartment-style rooms also give you far more room than you’d get elsewhere at this price.

Troia Golf is the main reason most golfers come here. It’s a demanding, natural course that rewards good ball-striking and punishes wayward shots. Staying two kilometres away means no long transfers and plenty of time to play it more than once.

What guests rate:

  • Room to breathe: suites suit golf groups sharing, with a fridge for cold drinks and a balcony for after your round
  • Location: the beach is on the doorstep and the first tee is minutes away
  • Views: the upper floors look out across the sea and estuary
  • Friendly staff who are quick to help
  • Year-round facilities: the indoor pool is handy in spring and autumn
