French Style on Ras Al Khaimah’s Quiet Coast

Sofitel Al Hamra opened in 2024 as the brand’s first resort in Ras Al Khaimah. It sits on a stretch of white-sand beach inside Al Hamra Village, a resort development that also includes the Waldorf Astoria and the Ritz-Carlton. It’s quieter than Dubai and a lot less built up, though there is still development going on nearby. Beyond the coast, the emirate runs inland to desert and the Hajar Mountains, including Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak.

The look is modern, with plenty of nods to local history: pearl diving, sailing, pottery and Bedouin travel all feed into the décor. There are 292 rooms, including 47 suites, plus beachfront villas. Every room has a sea or garden view, and many open straight onto the beach or pool area. Some suites come with private pools, which are worth considering for a group or a special trip.

Food and drink is one of the hotel’s strengths. The main options are:

Réunion, a French brasserie with a decent wine list

Key Information

This is a large, spread-out resort rather than an intimate one, but it rarely feels crowded. Rooms are modern and comfortable, with Sofitel’s own MyBed and big windows that make the most of the light. Guests consistently praise the staff, and service is warm and attentive, though as a newer hotel it has had the odd teething problem.

Dubai International Airport (DXB): About 80km, just over an hour by car. Flights from London take around seven hours.
Ras Al Khaimah Airport (RKT): About 35 minutes by car, though direct flights from the UK are limited.
Al Hamra Golf Club: A three to five-minute walk, across the road.
Al Hamra Mall: About 1.5km, roughly a 15 to 20-minute walk.
Beach: Right on the doorstep.

This year it’s was time to try Portugal. What a fantastic trip we had, it was seamless from start to finish. A great hotel, lovely food and the service was second to none. The courses were amazing. All in all another fantastic golf tour. Now we need to decide on the venue for next year with the added bonus of knowing Phil will sort us out wherever we choose.
