Whistling Straits

Pete Dye’s brawny links along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline is one of America‘s most decorated public courses. Host to three PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup, the Straits delivers proper windswept golf – over a thousand bunkers, walking-only fairways, and scenery that holds up against anywhere on the British or Irish coastline.

Ireland's Spirit on the Wisconsin Coast

The Straits Course is the flagship at Destination Kohler – Pete and Alice Dye’s full-blown tribute to Irish links golf, transplanted onto the western shore of Lake Michigan. The land was originally flat, an abandoned army airfield, so Dye trucked in hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of soil and sand to sculpt the dunes, ridges, and over a thousand bunkers that now define the place. About half the holes run directly along the lake’s two-mile coastline, and from most of the rest you can still see the water.

From the back tees it stretches to 7,790 yards (par 72), though the more sensible markers give the average golfer plenty to work with. The par 3s are the standout collection – Shipwreck at the 7th clings to a cliff above Lake Michigan, and Pinched Nerve at the 17th is a brutal long-iron over wave-shaped bunkers. Cliffhanger, the short par 4 at 13, has its green perched right on the lake’s edge. The closing 18th, Dyeabolical, is a bruising par 4 that splits opinion but isn’t easily forgotten.

Conditioning is consistently first-rate. Pace is honest rather than quick – the walk runs around seven miles, usually into a stiff breeze, and a caddie makes the round substantially better. The Straits sits within the wider Kohler resort, sharing the property with the Irish course and Blackwolf Run a short drive away.

Key Information

Expect proper links conditions, even though you’re four thousand miles from Scotland. Wind off the lake is near-constant, the fairways run firm and fast through summer, and the fescue rough is where careless shots go to die. It’s walking-only on the Straits – no carts at all – so plan for a 4.5 to 5-hour round and dress for whatever the lake decides to throw at you. Conditioning is immaculate, and spaced tee times keep things from feeling rushed or congested.

Better players will enjoy the sheer variety of shot-making on offer; mid- to higher-handicappers can have a great day too, provided they tee it forward and treat the bunkers like the punishment they are. Don’t skip the caddie. They know where the trouble hides.

Why Play at Whistling Straits?

For many golfers, the Straits Course is the reason they book the trip, but the wider Destination Kohler experience is what keeps people coming back. Pete Dye’s design sits right against the shoreline in a way that feels dramatic without ever becoming gimmicky. Nearly every hole leaves you staring at the lake, the dunes, or both. Then there’s the variety across the resort itself, from the Irish course to nearby Blackwolf Run, giving you several distinct styles of golf in one vacation. Conditioning is consistently elite, the caddie program is excellent, and the whole place feels built around serious golf travelers.
