The Leddie

A 27-room boutique hotel in the East Lothian village of Aberlady, set in a 17th-century landmark restored with a quietly modern touch. Muirfield, Gullane and North Berwick are all within easy reach, with Edinburgh roughly 30 minutes down the road.

Key Information

A Stylish Base on Scotland's Golf Coast

The Leddie sits on the main street of Aberlady, a small coastal village right in the middle of East Lothian’s so-called Golf Coast. Muirfield is around 10 minutes away, Gullane and Craigielaw are practically next door, and North Berwick (with The Renaissance Club, Glen and the West Links) is about 15 minutes by car. Edinburgh city centre and the airport are both around 30 to 45 minutes’ drive – close enough for a city day, far enough to feel properly rural.

The building dates back to 1638 and was previously known as Ducks Inn. Its recent restoration kept the period bones – beams, fireplaces, the schoolhouse it absorbed in the 1970s – and layered in a contemporary Scottish look: mossy greens, soft tartans, warm timber and natural wool. It’s stylish without trying too hard, and feels like a proper village hotel rather than a polished group property.

There are 27 individually designed rooms and suites, ranging from compact “snug” doubles to larger Cottage Suites, plus two pet-friendly cottages. Expect L’Occitane toiletries, Nespresso machines, robes and slippers as standard. The AA Rosette restaurant, run by head chef Lewis Lane, leans into seasonal Scottish produce – think local meat and seafood, no fuss. There’s also a relaxed bar, a sun terrace and garden seating that come into their own in better weather. Service is warm, local and genuinely helpful, particularly with golf logistics.

Key Information

Expect a stay that feels considered without being precious. Rooms vary in size — some of the smaller categories are compact, so it’s worth picking up a level if space matters — but they’re all comfortable, well-finished and quiet. Check-in is straightforward, and the team are quick to help with tee times, taxis from Longniddry station, or recommendations for nearby walks and pubs.

The setting is the real draw: a working coastal village with the John Muir Way on the doorstep and Aberlady Bay Nature Reserve a short stroll away. It suits couples, golf groups and anyone who wants links access without staying in a clubhouse-style hotel. Parking on-site is limited and first-come, first-served, with on-street spaces in front of the building.

Why Stay at The Leddie?

The Leddie works beautifully for golfers who want serious links access without losing the charm of a village stay. You’re based close to some of Scotland’s most admired coastal courses, yet the hotel never feels like a busy golf machine. It has a softer rhythm. Breakfast before an early tee time, a short drive through open East Lothian countryside, then a proper meal and a drink by the fire when the wind has done its work. For many travelers, that balance is the appeal, great golf nearby, characterful lodging, and local staff who understand the trip.
