Steigenberger Golf Resort El Gouna sits on its own peninsula on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, with a Gene Bates and Fred Couples-designed 18-hole course winding through turquoise lagoons. Year-round sunshine, championship-grade conditioning and a relaxed, Nubian-inspired hotel – all about 35 minutes from Hurghada Airport.
Red Sea Golf

Key Information
The course – El Gouna Golf Club – was designed by Gene Bates and Fred Couples and opened in 1999. It’s an 18-hole par 72 stretching to just over 6,200 metres from the back tees, with six tee options on every hole, so you can play it as a stiff test or a holiday round. Lagoons come into play on most holes, the Red Sea Mountains sit on the horizon, and the Seashore Paspalum fairways and greens hold up well in the heat. The signature 17th is a long par 5 hugging the water – it’ll either save your round or sink it. A maximum handicap of 45 applies from October to April.
The resort itself has been fully renovated in recent years. Architect Michael Graves gave the buildings a Nubian feel – arched windows, domed ceilings, warm earth tones – and the 268 rooms and 58 suites look out over the lagoon, gardens, pools or course. There are three swimming pools (one heated in winter), a kids’ pool, a private lagoon beach and a spa. Dining covers most bases: Fairways for the daily buffet, La Rotisserie for à la carte international, Harumaki for Japanese, and Lagoon Terrasse for something lighter. El Gouna itself is a purpose-built resort town just north of Hurghada, with a marina full of restaurants and bars, six miles of beach, and easy access to diving, kitesurfing and desert excursions. A complimentary boat shuttle links the hotel directly to the golf clubhouse.

Conditions are consistently good. The Paspalum surfaces hold up year-round, greens run true and reasonably quick, and the course is well presented from first tee to last. It’s one course on site, with six tee positions making it playable for most abilities, though the wind off the Red Sea can stiffen things up considerably. Pace of play tends to be relaxed, tee times are easy to come by outside peak season, and service across the resort is friendly and unhurried.
The clubhouse has a bar, à la carte restaurant and a fully stocked pro shop. The course has hosted the Egyptian Amateur Open and the Egyptian Ladies Amateur Open (Nefertiti Cup), so it’s used to staging competitive play.

For many golfers, El Gouna works because it blends proper resort comfort with a course that has real character. The setting does a lot of the heavy lifting, with water in play, mountain views in the distance and that bright Red Sea light giving every hole a clean, open feel. It’s playable, but not bland. Choose the right tees and you’ll get a vacation round with plenty of chances to score, move back and the lagoons start asking tougher questions. Off the course, the pools, lagoon beach, spa and marina nearby make it easy to turn a golf trip into a full escape.
