Royal Óbidos sits on a headland above the Atlantic, about an hour’s drive north of Lisbon. The course was one of Seve Ballesteros’s final designs – he passed away before it opened in 2012 – and it plays 7,000 yards off the tips to a par of 72. Water comes into play on eight holes, the front nine looks down over the Óbidos Lagoon and the back nine runs along the Atlantic, so you’re rarely short of a view. The short 3rd to an island green tends to be everyone’s photograph hole, and the uphill par-5 18th plays back towards the clubhouse with the ocean stretched out behind you. Shot placement matters more than raw distance, and the Atlantic wind can make club selection interesting.

The on-site Evolutee Hotel is a 39-room five-star property designed by Yoo Studio (Philippe Starck’s firm), with sea- and course-facing rooms, a full spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and two restaurants. Villas and apartments are also available if you’d rather self-cater. The walled medieval town of Óbidos, ten minutes up the road, is worth a wander for the cobbled lanes and the local ginjinha cherry liqueur served in small chocolate cups. The resort sits next door to West Cliffs and Praia D’El Rey, so 54-hole trips across all three are straightforward to arrange, with free transfers laid on.
