ABOUT THE COURSE
Royal Birkdale is widely regarded as one of England’s greatest links courses and has hosted ten Open Championships, with winners including Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Jordan Spieth. Founded in 1889 and set among the towering sand dunes of Southport on the Lancashire coast, the course was designed with fairways routed through natural valleys rather than over the dunes, creating a fair but formidable test that rewards precision and clear strategic thinking from tee to green. Visitors are treated as members for the day and consistently praise the warm welcome, from the professional shop and course hosts through to the halfway house, where the food and drink selection is a highlight in itself. The iconic Art Deco clubhouse is steeped in Open and Ryder Cup history and well worth exploring before or after your round, with excellent dining and views over the 18th. Practice facilities include a driving range and short game area, and caddies are available and highly recommended for their intimate knowledge of the course.
