Grotto Bay doesn’t have its own course, but it doesn’t need one. The resort sits within five minutes of two of Bermuda’s finest golf courses, making it one of the most practical bases on the island for a golf trip. The star of the show nearby is Port Royal – a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that opened in 1970, stretched across dramatic coastal terrain, and has since become one of the most talked-about public courses in the world. The signature 16th is a par three played from a tee on the cliff edge – perhaps Bermuda’s most photographed hole. Atlantic winds make every round an exercise in course management, and the large, undulating greens will test your patience as much as your swing.

The resort itself sits on a lush 21-acre tropical estate with dramatic caves, a private pink-sand beach, and woodland along the water’s edge. Accommodation comes across 201 rooms spread through 21 cottages – either ocean view or oceanfront – with traditional island furnishings and all the modern basics covered. Dining is solid rather than flashy. The Hibiscus Dining Room offers a more formal setting, the Palm Court keeps things relaxed and tropical, and the Bayside Grill handles lunch poolside with a swim-up bar in season. The Rumhouse Bar, with live entertainment most nights, is where the evenings tend to end up.

The standout off-course draw is Natura Spa – set inside a 500,000-year-old cave with floating massage beds above an underground pool. There are only a handful of cave spas like it in the world, and it’s genuinely worth an afternoon.
