Irish Estate Golf with Real Championship Feel

Carton House sits on a vast 1,100-acre historic estate in County Kildare, around 30 minutes from Dublin Airport, so it’s an easy hop from the UK. The setting is classic Irish parkland, open lawns, mature trees, and long estate drives, but the feel is modern and well run rather than old-fashioned.

Golf is a big part of the draw, with two championship courses on site: the Montgomerie Course and the O’Meara Course. The Montgomerie is the tougher of the two, a strong inland links-style layout that has hosted the Irish Open, while the O’Meara winds more through parkland and water, offering variety and slightly more forgiveness. Together, they give a good balance for mixed groups.

The hotel itself is a restored country house with a contemporary wing. Rooms are smart and comfortable, and standards are high without being over the top. Dining is a strong point, with several restaurants and bars, and there’s a proper spa, pool, and leisure facilities. Dublin is close enough for a city visit, but most groups are happy staying on the estate.

Expect a polished, well-organised resort that’s used to hosting golf groups. Course conditioning is generally strong year-round, with the Montgomerie providing a proper championship test and the O’Meara offering a more flowing, scenic round. The atmosphere is relaxed but upmarket, and service levels are consistent.

Having two courses on site makes planning easy, and tee times are well managed. This year it’s was time to try Portugal. What a fantastic trip we had, it was seamless from start to finish. A great hotel, lovely food and the service was second to none. The courses were amazing. All in all another fantastic golf tour. Now we need to decide on the venue for next year with the added bonus of knowing Phil will sort us out wherever we choose.
