Bethpage Black

Long Island’s notorious municipal monster needs no introduction. Home of the 2025 Ryder Cup and a course so demanding it carries an official warning sign on the first tee, Bethpage Black is one of the few genuine major championship venues anywhere in the world that you can simply book and play.

Bethpage Black: New York's Brutal Public Beast

A.W. Tillinghast’s 1936 design sits about an hour east of Manhattan inside Bethpage State Park, one of five courses on the property and the only one most travelling golfers come to play. The Black stretches to 7,468 yards from the tips, plays as a par 71, and earns its reputation from the opening tee shot. Fairways are narrow, the rough is dense, and the bunkers are deep, steep-faced and everywhere – Tillinghast’s signature “Great Hazard” style writ large. Rees Jones restored and toughened the course ahead of the 2002 U.S. Open, and it’s been refined again since for the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup.

The routing rolls through mature oak and pine woodland with significant elevation changes, and the par-4 fourth, par-4 fifth and par-3 17th are the holes most players will remember on the drive home. Conditioning is excellent for a public course – closer to a private club than a municipal – though greens fees and tee-time competition reflect that. Pace can be slow at peak times, often pushing five hours, partly because most players are getting their first crack at it. There’s no resort attached; you play the Black, eat at the clubhouse, and head back into Manhattan or out to the Hamptons.

Key Information

It feels heavier than it looks on TV. The walks between greens and tees are long, the hills are steeper than they appear, and the rough genuinely punishes anything offline – so missed fairways usually mean a wedge back out rather than a hero shot. Conditioning is consistently sharp, with firm greens and tightly mown approaches.

Crowds are mixed: serious players ticking off a bucket-list round, plus locals who’ve drawn a tee time in the lottery. Best suited to single-figure handicappers who can move the ball both ways and aren’t fazed by losing a few. Higher handicappers can absolutely play it, but consider the tees carefully and bring spare balls. Walking is mandatory for non-disabled players, and it’s a proper hike — pack accordingly.

Why Play at Bethpage Black?

Golfers come to Bethpage Black because it offers something rare, a true major championship test that anyone can try to book. There’s no resort gloss here, and that’s part of the appeal. You’re playing public golf with a private club level of challenge, surrounded by tall trees, heavy bunkering, and holes that demand proper decisions from the tee. The atmosphere feels serious but not stiff. Locals know the place, visitors respect it, and everyone seems to understand the course will win a few battles. For many golfers, simply finishing 18 feels like a badge of honor.
