Few Spanish clubs can match El Prat’s pedigree. It began life in 1912 beside what is now Barcelona’s airport. When the runways expanded, the club moved inland to Terrassa and brought in Greg Norman to design 45 new holes across woodland, open fields and ravines.

Visitors have two 18-hole courses to choose from. The nine-hole Green course is for members only.

  • Pink (Rosa): This is the championship course and the host of the 2011 and 2015 Spanish Opens. It measures around 7,070 yards, with tree-lined fairways, real climbs on the back nine and a superb par-3 11th.
  • Yellow (Amarillo): Just over 7,300 yards, it’s longer on paper but more open, with heavy bunkering and wheat-filled waste ground between the holes. The uphill 18th, a 466-yard par 4, is a stern finish.

What ties them together? Norman’s preference for precision over power. Bunkers are in play off most tees. The bentgrass greens sit raised, firm and quick, which puts real pressure on your approach play. Condition is consistently excellent, though pace can slow when the course is busy, so aim for an early start.

With La Mola Hotel on site and the city half an hour away, El Prat fits neatly into a Barcelona golf break.

Key Information

Arrive knowing which course you’re on. It makes a difference.

  • The Pink occupies the hillier side of the property. Fairways run through pine woodland, the back nine climbs noticeably, and some green-to-tee walks are long. The club recommends a buggy, and most visitors take one.
  • The Yellow is gentler underfoot and easy to walk. It’s also more exposed, so the wind plays a bigger part. The tree-lined par-5 16th is the one hole that breaks up the open feel.

Neither course is a pushover. From the back tees the Yellow carries a slope of 142, and on both courses bunkers catch wayward drives on most holes. Then there are the greens. Running at around 9 to 10 on the Stimpmeter and raised above the fairway, they punish a miss on the wrong side. With seven sets of tees, there’s a sensible length for everyone, so pick yours honestly.

Don’t expect sea views. Instead, you look out over the Sant Llorenç del Munt natural park and the rocky La Mola peak. Being inland, summers get properly hot, which is why spring and autumn are the best times to go. Winter golf is perfectly playable, if a little cool first thing.

Why Play at Real Club de Golf El Prat?

History, for a start. El Prat is a Royal club with more than a century behind it and one of the most frequent Spanish Open venues in the country. Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal both won here in the 1980s, though on the old course by the airport. On today’s Pink, you’re playing holes the European Tour visited as recently as 2015.

Then there’s the design. This is Greg Norman at his most strategic. You’ll spend the round deciding which bunkers to take on, where to miss and when to leave the driver in the bag. Demanding? Yes. Unfair? Rarely.

The surroundings add a lot. There are no villas lining the fairways here, just protected parkland, wheat fields and views up to La Mola. Carlos Ferrater’s modern clubhouse is a good place to finish, and staying at La Mola Hotel puts both courses on your doorstep.

Our suggestion? Warm up on the Yellow, then take on the Pink once you’ve got the measure of the greens. Book early tee times, and take a buggy on the Pink.
