Golf Breaks in Marrakech

Marrakech has quietly become one of Africa’s favourite winter golf escapes. With courses designed by some of the sport’s biggest names, reliable sunshine from October through April, and a city that genuinely rewards exploration, it offers something most golf destinations simply can’t match.

What makes a Marrakech golf break so compelling is the sheer range of ways you can put a trip together. You might base yourself in a palatial riad in the old medina and take a taxi to the course each morning, or settle into one of the resort hotels that sit right alongside their fairways with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop. The city itself sits about an hour from the mountains and roughly the same distance from the plains that stretch toward the coast, which gives the whole area a dramatic, varied feel that photographs can’t quite do justice.

For accommodation, Marrakech covers every budget and style. Five star luxury is genuinely competitive here, with names like Fairmont, Four Seasons, and Taj all represented, while boutique riads in the medina offer something far more atmospheric for travellers who’d rather be woken by the call to prayer than a pool bar playlist. There are solid mid-range options too.

Direct flights from London Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester, and Birmingham make the logistics easy, with journey times typically sitting around three hours. Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways, and Royal Air Maroc all serve the route, so fares are genuinely competitive. Marrakech works brilliantly for couples, groups of friends, and anyone who wants their golf holiday to feel like a proper adventure rather than just another week on an Algarve course.

Best Golf Holiday Destinations in Marrakech

Marrakech is a single city rather than a sprawling region, but there’s enough variety within a relatively compact area to keep different types of traveller happy. The courses spread out across several distinct zones around the city, from the lush resort complexes of the Palmeraie to the more open, links-influenced layouts to the south and east. Some golfers prefer to base themselves in the medina and treat the golf as one element of a broader cultural break. Others want a resort hotel with direct course access and nothing more strenuous than a walk to the clubhouse before breakfast. Both approaches work, and the distance between the city centre and the furthest courses is rarely more than 30 or 40 minutes. For groups travelling together, the flexibility to mix courses across a week gives a Marrakech golf holiday a variety that keeps things fresh across multiple rounds.

Beyond the golf, Marrakech rewards curiosity. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and genuinely one of the world’s great urban experiences. The souks are chaotic, colourful, occasionally overwhelming, and completely unlike anything you’ll encounter in Europe. Djemaa el-Fna, the great main square, transforms every evening into an open-air spectacle of food stalls, musicians, storytellers, and snake charmers that feels like something from a different century. It’s brilliant.

The food scene has improved enormously over the past decade. You’ll find everything from slow-cooked lamb tagine in century-old restaurants to inventive modern Moroccan cooking from a new generation of chefs who trained in Paris and London before coming home.

For partners who don’t play golf, there’s a full day’s worth of activity in the medina alone, and that’s before you factor in hammam visits, day trips to the Ourika Valley, camel treks into the Palmeraie, or the drive south toward the dunes at Zagora. Marrakech works for families with older children too, though the medina’s narrow streets and bustling atmosphere might be quite a lot for very young ones.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Marrakech

From championship layouts to hidden gems, these are the courses every golfer should have on their list when planning a golf holiday in Marrakech.

Frequently voted the best course in Morocco and Africa, Assoufid is a desert-style masterpiece designed by Niall Cameron. It winds through naturally undulating terrain with views of the Atlas Mountains, featuring palms, cacti, and olive trees. For a stay that matches this level of exclusivity, the Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech is just a short drive away, offering palatial suites and a world-class spa in a vast, tranquil estate.

Opened in 1927, this is the oldest course in Marrakech and was a favorite of King Hassan II. It is a lush, parkland-style oasis filled with over 15,000 trees, including Aleppo pines, eucalyptus, and orange trees. To stay in the heart of Marrakech’s luxury district nearby, the Sofitel Marrakech Palais Imperial provides a grand, Moorish-style experience within walking distance of the city’s historic landmarks.

Managed by Troon Golf, this course is famous for its immaculate conditioning and “waste bunker” desert aesthetic. It is a very playable, resort-style course that feels incredibly relaxing. For a boutique and high-design stay, the Sirayane Boutique Hotel & Spa is located nearby, offering an intimate, adults-focused atmosphere with stunning views of the mountains.

Another Cabell B. Robinson creation, Amelkis is a 27-hole complex known for its “American” feel, with large bunkers and significant water hazards. It is a colorful course that provides a fun, high-energy round of golf. A perfect nearby lodging is the Amanjena, an ultra-luxury resort inspired by the rose-hued buildings of old Marrakech, offering unparalleled privacy and service.

Noria is one of the most visually distinct courses in the world, divided into three “zones” (orchard, desert, and water) and featuring a traditional Moroccan water wheel (Noria) on the 15th hole. To keep the Moroccan theme going, stay at the Jaal Riad Resort, a contemporary, adults-only hotel that blends traditional craftsmanship with a modern, social lifestyle.

This “desert-link” course by Jack Nicklaus is a true championship test, known for its strategic bunkering and large, fast greens. It’s a wide-open layout that allows you to fully take in the mountain backdrop. You should stay at the Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi, which offers a sophisticated urban retreat with direct access to the Palais des Congrès and excellent shuttle links to the southern golf corridor.

Designed by Kyle Phillips, Al Maaden is a unique, geometric course characterized by its rectangular water hazards that give it a contemporary, artistic feel. It is a highly technical course that demands precision. The best way to experience it is by staying on-site at the Al Maaden VillaHotel & Spa, where you can enjoy your own private riad-style villa with a pool just a few steps from the first tee.

Often considered the most “luxurious” turf in the city, this Cabell B. Robinson design is a lush garden course featuring old olive trees and a spectacular clubhouse. It is exclusively well-maintained and feels like a private sanctuary. You should stay on-site at the Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, a legendary property where the “Prince Villa” offers the ultimate private golf retreat.

Named after the legendary Colin Montgomerie, this course is located closer to the city center and offers views of the Koutoubia Mosque. It features elevated tees and 81 bunkers, providing a technical but fair challenge. For a stay that puts you right in the middle of the action, the Four Seasons Resort Marrakech is nearby, offering a five-star family-friendly oasis within 40 acres of sun-drenched gardens.

Located in the famous Palmeraie grove, this 27-hole complex is a classic of Marrakech golf, featuring numerous lakes and thousands of palm trees. It is a quintessential resort course that is perfect for all skill levels. You should stay at the Hotel Du Golf by Pickalbatros, an all-inclusive five-star hotel located right on the course, making it a very convenient choice for a “hassle-free” golf break.

Best time to play golf in Marrakech

The golfing season in Marrakech is essentially the inverse of northern Europe’s, which is a large part of its appeal. October through April is when you want to be here. Temperatures during these months range from the mid-teens in December and January up to the mid-twenties in April and October, with reliable sunshine and very little rain. December and January can feel slightly cool in the mornings, particularly on exposed courses where the Atlas wind picks up, so a light layer is worth packing. February and March are arguably the sweet spot: temperatures are consistently comfortable, the courses are well-watered and in excellent shape, and the almond blossom around the foothills of the mountains is pretty spectacular if you get out of the city. July and August should generally be avoided if you’re planning to play golf.

Temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees and the courses suffer for it. May and June can work, particularly early morning rounds, but the heat builds quickly. Pricing tends to peak around the Christmas and New Year period and again in late March when the European spring break crowd arrives.

Frequently asked Marrakech golf break questions

The Amelkis Golf Club is widely considered the benchmark, a Robert Trent Jones Jr design that winds through palms and olive groves with Atlas Mountain views throughout. Al Maaden Golf Resort, designed by Kyle Phillips, is a more recent addition and consistently earns strong reviews for its course conditioning and clubhouse facilities.

Marrakech Menara Airport is well connected to the UK, with direct flights from London Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, and several other regional airports. Flight time is typically around three to three and a half hours. British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, and Royal Air Maroc all operate the route, and with multiple airlines competing, fares can be quite reasonable, particularly outside the Christmas and Easter peaks.

October to April covers the main season, with February, March, and October offering perhaps the most pleasant combination of temperature, course condition, and atmosphere. December and January are popular with UK travellers escaping winter, though mornings can feel quite cool. Spring brings spectacular scenery in the surrounding landscape.

It’s the combination that sets it apart. You’re playing courses of genuine European standard with extraordinary mountain scenery in a backdrop, at green fees that are often lower than comparable layouts in Spain or Portugal. And then in the evening you’re in one of the world’s most atmospheric cities. There’s no equivalent of the Djemaa el-Fna in Marbella.

Golf Holiday Facts

Morocco welcomed over 14.5 million international tourists in 2023, with Marrakech accounting for the largest share of arrivals among the country's cities.

Golf tourism plays a meaningful role within this broader picture. Marrakech has invested substantially in its golf infrastructure over the past two decades, and the city now hosts more than a dozen courses within reasonable driving distance of the city centre.(1)

The Marrakech golf season runs for approximately seven months of the year, from October through April, giving the destination a longer viable window than most of southern Europe.

Unlike destinations such as the Canary Islands or Cyprus, which also target winter golf travellers, Marrakech offers a genuine warm-weather season that extends well into spring. Average temperatures between October and April range from around 15 degrees Celsius in January to 25 degrees in April, making early and late season rounds genuinely comfortable rather than merely tolerable. (2)

Golf resort development in and around Marrakech has attracted significant international investment, with major hospitality groups choosing the city as a base for flagship African properties.

The presence of brands including Four Seasons, Fairmont, and Mandarin Oriental reflects both the quality of the destination and the confidence international investors have placed in Moroccan golf tourism. Several of these properties have integrated golf courses developed to international competitive standards, with Al Maaden having hosted events on the European Challenge Tour. (3)
