Golf Breaks in Algarve

The Algarve is, quite simply, one of Europe’s great golfing regions. More than 40 courses stretch along a coastline famous for its golden cliffs and Atlantic light, ranging from championship layouts that host European Tour events to quieter parkland tracks perfect for a relaxed few days away.

What makes the Algarve work so well as a golf destination is the sheer variety packed into a relatively compact stretch of southern Portugal. You can be playing a cliffside links-style course in the morning and eating fresh seafood by the harbour that evening, and the whole thing never feels rushed or complicated.

Accommodation spans the full range. The region has everything from five-star resort hotels with private golf academies to comfortable aparthotels that give groups of friends the independence they prefer. Self-catering villas with pools are particularly popular with families and larger parties who want their own space between rounds.

Geographically, the Algarve divides into distinct pockets, each with its own character. Vilamoura is the most established golfing hub, with five courses within easy reach and a marina full of restaurants and bars. The western stretch around Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo is home to some of the most prestigious addresses in European golf. Further west, around Lagos and Sagres, the landscape becomes wilder and the courses feel more dramatic. The eastern Algarve, heading towards the Spanish border, is quieter and less commercialised.

Faro Airport serves the whole region, with direct flights from most UK and major European cities taking between two and two and a half hours. It’s one of the most accessible sun and golf destinations anywhere in Europe.

Best Golf Holiday Destinations in Algarve

The Algarve packages work well for almost every type of golf traveller, from serious competition players chasing bucket-list courses to groups of friends who want a well-priced week with solid golf and good nights out. The western corridor between Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura remains the premium choice, with the highest concentration of top-ranked courses and the most polished resort infrastructure. Lagos and the western tip suit those who want something with a bit more edge and fewer crowds. The eastern Algarve around Tavira and Castro Marim is ideal for golfers who prefer a quieter, more authentically Portuguese experience, often at significantly lower prices.

Beyond the courses, the Algarve offers a richness of experience that elevates a golf trip into something more. The landscape is genuinely spectacular. Limestone cliffs drop into turquoise water along much of the coastline, and inland the hills of the Serra de Monchique are covered in cork oak and eucalyptus. It’s a visually arresting part of the world, and that quality transfers onto the courses themselves, many of which use the natural terrain to memorable effect.

The food and drink culture is an underrated part of any Algarve golf trip. Portuguese cuisine is hearty, unfussy and delicious. Grilled fish, slow-cooked pork dishes, local wines from the Alentejo and Algarve regions, and custard tarts with an espresso that costs almost nothing by UK standards. Evenings tend to be unhurried in a way that feels genuinely restorative.

For groups travelling with non-golfers, the Algarve is one of the easier sells. The beaches are outstanding, the water parks and boat trips keep families busy, and towns like Lagos and Tavira have enough historical interest to fill a day without much effort. It’s a destination that accommodates different priorities without anyone feeling compromised.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Algarve

From championship layouts to hidden gems, these are the courses every golfer should have on their list when planning a golf holiday in Algarve.

Consistently ranked as the #1 course in Portugal, this Jack Nicklaus Signature layout offers a “private club” feel with no two holes running parallel. The service is peerless, and the course is flawlessly integrated into the rolling hills of the Eastern Algarve. For the ultimate luxury, stay on-site at the Monte Rei Clubhouse Residences, which offers high-spec apartments and villas just a few steps from the Michelin-starred restaurant, Vistas.

As the long time home of the Portugal Masters, this Arnold Palmer design is a big-hitting championship course featuring wide-open fairways and significant water hazards. It’s a “pro-style” experience where you can test yourself on the same turf as the tour stars. Stay at the Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort, which overlooks the course and offers a sophisticated retreat with dedicated “Golf Gurus” to help manage your bookings and equipment.

The Royal Course is home to arguably the most famous golf shot in the world—the par-3 16th, which requires a carry over the orange-red sandstone cliffs with the Atlantic crashing below. It is a high-drama, scenic round from start to finish. The best place to stay is the Vale do Lobo Resort, where you can rent luxury villas or apartments that put you within walking distance of “The Praca,” the resort’s vibrant beachfront hub of restaurants and bars.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, Palmares features three distinct 9-hole loops: Alvor (parkland), Lagos (links-style), and Praia (seaside). It offers the most dramatic elevation changes in the Western Algarve. For a contemporary vibe, stay at the Palmares Beach House Hotel, an adults-only boutique hotel located right on the course with breathtaking views of the Bay of Lagos and the Atlantic.

Set in a former orange grove, Laranjal is known for its five beautiful lakes and incredibly fast, undulating greens. It’s a newer, more “open” layout compared to its sister courses, but its narrow fairways still demand precision. For a chic, boutique-style stay, The Magnolia Hotel is a 1950s Palm Springs-inspired property located right on the edge of the Quinta do Lago estate, offering a fun and high-energy atmosphere.

A crown jewel of the “Golden Triangle,” the South Course is a prestigious 8-time host of the Portuguese Open. After a massive 2021 renovation, its fairways are pristine, winding through umbrella pines and overlooking the Ria Formosa National Park. The ideal base is the Conrad Algarve, a modern, palatial 5-star hotel located at the entrance of the resort, known for its exceptional spa and proximity to the region’s best dining.

Widely considered one of the most beautiful courses in Europe, San Lorenzo winds through the saltwater lagoons of the Ria Formosa. The views on the back nine are spectacular, particularly as the course approaches the Atlantic coastline. To gain priority access to this exclusive course, you should stay at the Dona Filipa Hotel, a classic luxury property in Vale do Lobo that owns the course and provides a seamless shuttle service for its guests.

Known as the “Grande Dame” of the Algarve, this is a classic, traditional parkland course that predates the modern resort boom. It’s characterized by tight, tree-lined fairways and a peaceful, old-world atmosphere. Stay at the Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa, which is located just a few minutes away and features the largest spa in Portugal—perfect for post-round recovery.

Sir Nick Faldo’s design is a strategic masterpiece that feels more like a desert course, featuring rocky outcrops, cacti, and olive trees instead of the typical pines. It is a tough, cerebral challenge that rewards accuracy over distance. You should stay at the Amendoeira Golf Resort, where the spacious, modern apartments come with access to two championship courses and the only illuminated 9-hole course in Portugal for night golf.

This is the course that started it all—the first 18-hole course built in the Algarve, designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. It is a flat but challenging parkland layout with deep bunkers and strategic water. The only way to truly experience its history is by staying at the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, a grand, traditional hotel that sits right on the first tee and exudes a classic, colonial-style elegance.

Best time to play golf in Algarve

The Algarve is genuinely one of those rare places where you can play decent golf in almost any month of the year. That said, there are clear sweet spots. Spring, running from mid-March through May, is arguably the finest time to visit. Temperatures sit between 18 and 24 degrees, the courses are at their greenest following the winter rains, and the tourist crowds haven’t fully arrived yet. Prices are reasonable and you can almost always get the tee times you want.

October and November offer something similar. Summer heat has passed, temperatures are still comfortably in the low to mid-twenties, and rates across hotels and golf courses drop quite noticeably from their July and August peaks. This period is enormously popular with UK golfers for good reason.

Golf Holiday Facts

Golf tourism is estimated to contribute over 500 million euros annually to the Algarve regional economy.

The economic weight of golf in the Algarve is substantial. Golf visitors spend significantly more per day than standard beach tourists, with combined expenditure on accommodation, green fees, dining and ancillary activities placing them among the highest-value traveller segments in the region.(1)

The Algarve receives approximately 300 days of sunshine per year, supporting a genuinely viable year-round golf season.

Unlike many northern European golf destinations that effectively close down from October through March, the Algarve maintains playable conditions across all twelve months. Average temperatures range from a winter low of around 12 degrees Celsius in January to a summer high approaching 36 degrees in July and August.(2)

Faro Airport handled approximately 10 million passengers in 2023, with golf-related tourism among the key drivers of leisure traffic.

The scale of air access into Faro is a meaningful competitive advantage for the Algarve as a golf destination. The airport’s connectivity to the UK and northern Europe, combined with relatively short flight times and strong competition among budget and full-service carriers, keeps airfare accessible for a broad range of travellers.(3)
