The Oxfordshire Golf Resort & Spa

Set in 300 acres of rolling Chiltern countryside near Thame, The Oxfordshire pairs a Rees Jones championship course with a four-star hotel and spa. It’s hosted European Tour events and Ladies’ Opens, sits forty minutes from central London, and works equally well for a weekend break or a longer golf trip.

Key Information

Championship Golf, Forty Minutes from London

The Oxfordshire is the only UK course Rees Jones ever built, and it shows. Where most English courses lean parkland-traditional, this one borrows from the American tournament playbook – big earthworks, sand-based fairways, 135 bunkers and four sizeable lakes. The land is open and gently undulating rather than dramatic, but when the wind picks up across the ridgeline, the place plays a lot like a links. Off the back tees it stretches past 7,400 yards; from the whites it’s a fair test for a single-figure player and stays manageable from forward markers. The 17th – a 588-yard par five wrapped around water – is the hole everyone remembers.

The hotel is a contemporary four-star with 50 rooms, including four penthouse suites. Most have private balconies looking over the course or out across the Chilterns. Tempus Spa is the highlight off the course: indoor pool, sauna, steam room, hot tub and Japanese-style treatment rooms. Dining covers the Signature Restaurant overlooking the course, the quieter Lakes Lounge, and a Spike Bar that runs late enough for the post-round debrief.

For location, you’re 12 miles from Oxford – easy enough to head in for a college walk or dinner – and the M40 puts central London at about 40 minutes by car when the traffic plays ball. Thame itself is ten minutes down the road if you fancy a country-pub evening. Heathrow is a comfortable run, which makes the resort an obvious first or last stop for visiting golfers.

Key Information

There’s one course on site, but it does a lot of work. Conditioning is consistently strong – greens are kept fast and true, and the club’s policy is to play the full course through winter with no temporary greens. Worth knowing if you’re booking off-season.

It plays to a serious championship spec – par 72, slope 132, course rating 75.3 – and that pedigree shows. The Oxfordshire hosted the Benson & Hedges International Open for four years in the late 1990s, the Andersen Consulting World Championship and the Brabazon Trophy in 2005. Seve, Faldo, Montgomerie and Clarke have all played it competitively. Service is friendly without being formal, the clubhouse runs efficiently, and the on-site hotel means no shuttling between course and bed.

Why Play at The Oxfordshire Golf Resort & Spa?

For many golfers, The Oxfordshire hits a sweet spot that’s surprisingly hard to find in England. You get championship level golf with resort convenience, but without the stiffness some traditional clubs still carry. Conditioning is consistently excellent, even through winter, and the layout has enough variety to stay interesting over several rounds. The finishing stretch is especially strong, with risk and reward holes that can change a scorecard quickly. Staying on site makes the whole trip smoother too. Breakfast, practice, first tee and dinner are all within a short walk. It’s easy to see why so many visiting golfers build UK itineraries around a stop here.
