Impressive Playa Granada sits right on the beach in Motril, with the Los Moriscos Golf Club a five-minute walk from the lobby. It’s the only 18-hole course on the Costa Tropical, and it makes the most of the setting – flat, links-style fairways lined with palms and mango trees, with the Mediterranean on one side and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada filling the horizon on the other.

The course originally opened in 1974 and was expanded to 18 holes in 2006, with Manuel Piñero’s redesign bringing wider fairways, two lakes, and a tricky par-three island green on the back nine. At 5,072 yards off the regulars and playing to a par of 70, it’s not a brutal test, but the back nine has some awkward doglegs and enough water to keep your card honest. Rounds typically run around four hours, and because the terrain is almost entirely flat, you can walk it without much fuss. Rental sets from Callaway, TaylorMade and Ping are available at the clubhouse, and there’s a golf academy run by former Spanish champion Víctor Casado if you fancy a lesson.

Back at the resort, you’ve got 395 recently renovated rooms with balconies or terraces, three outdoor pools, the WellFit Spa, and a new Sky Bar Terrace overlooking the sea. Dining splits between a main buffet restaurant and La Bodega, which leans Mediterranean and has a decent Spanish wine list. Granada and the Alhambra are about 40 minutes inland – well worth a day trip if you’ve got time.

The course is in decent shape year-round and pitched at holiday golfers rather than scratch players – wide fairways, generous greens, and a layout that lets mid-handicappers enjoy themselves without losing half a dozen balls. There’s one 18-hole course on site (Los Moriscos), and it’s the only 18-hole course on the whole Costa Tropical, so there’s no shuttling between venues – one course, one base, simple.

Service at the resort is friendly and unfussy, and the bars and pool areas have a relaxed feel rather than anything overly polished. The walk from your room to the first tee is one of the shorter ones you’ll find in Spain, which makes early tee times and lazy afternoon nines genuinely easy. The Sierra Nevada views are the standout – hard to beat teeing off with snow on the peaks behind you.
