TPC Harding Park

A genuine PGA Tour venue hiding in plain sight on the edge of Lake Merced, TPC Harding Park is the rare municipal course where you can tee it up on the same turf Collin Morikawa won his first major. Cypress-lined, fairly priced for residents, and pure San Francisco character throughout.

San Francisco's Public Major Championship Test

Originally designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting in 1925- the same pairing behind the Olympic Club’s famous Lake Course just across the water – Harding Park spent decades in decline before a $16 million restoration in 2002-03 brought it back to championship standard. It now stretches to 7,169 yards, par 72, on a gently rolling peninsula ringed by Lake Merced. Towering Monterey Cypress trees frame nearly every hole, the fairways are tighter than you’d expect for a muni, and the rough can be punishing when it’s grown out for tournament weeks. The front nine eases you in through tree-lined corridors; the back nine is where the course earns its reputation. From the 14th onward, holes hug the lake, the wind picks up, and the closing stretch – the drivable 16th, the exposed par-3 17th, and the spectacular dogleg-left 18th along the water – ranks among the best finishes in public golf.

Conditioning is generally very good, though greens can occasionally run inconsistent given the volume of play. Pace tends to sit around 4½ hours, sometimes longer at weekends, partly because it’s cart-path only year-round. It slots neatly into any Bay Area itinerary alongside Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Pasatiempo – the urban counterpoint to the coastal heavyweights, and considerably easier on the wallet.

Key Information

Cool, often breezy, occasionally fog-touched – this is classic San Francisco golf, so pack a layer even in summer. The terrain is gently rolling rather than hilly, which makes it surprisingly walkable, and many regulars argue walking is the better way to play given the cart-path-only rule. Greens are generally true and the fairways well kept, though don’t expect Augusta-level polish – it’s still a busy public course turning over thousands of rounds.

Expect company: tee sheets fill quickly, twosomes get paired up, and you’ll likely be playing behind a group of locals who know every break. Low and mid handicappers will get the most from the championship tees, but there are five sets to choose from, so it works for mixed-ability groups and casual visitors equally well.

Why Play at TPC Harding Park?

For many golfers, Harding Park delivers something the great coastal resorts can’t quite replicate, championship golf with a distinctly local San Francisco character. The towering cypress trees, shifting lake winds, and closing stretch beside Lake Merced create a round that feels memorable without feeling manufactured. You’re walking the same fairways that have hosted major championships and PGA Tour events, yet it still carries the energy of a public course where locals tee it up every week. That balance is a big part of the appeal. It’s demanding enough for serious players, relaxed enough for a buddies trip, and considerably more accessible than many California bucket list venues.
