Golf Breaks in El Gouna

El Gouna is one of the world’s most distinctive golf destinations, combining championship courses with the extraordinary backdrop of Egypt’s Red Sea coast. Known as the “Venice of Egypt” for its enchanting network of lagoons and waterways, this purpose-built resort town delivers a golfing experience unlike anywhere else on earth. Where other destinations offer golf as an add-on, El Gouna is built around it — with world class courses, luxury resort hotels, and a year-round climate that makes every month a viable tee time.

The destination’s credentials go well beyond its two home courses. Within an hour’s drive, golfers can access some of the finest layouts in North Africa and the Middle East, from Gary Player’s historic Cascades at Soma Bay to the longest championship course in the region at Madinat Makadi. The desert and Red Sea scenery sets the tone for every round — mountain ridges, turquoise lagoons, and clear blue skies providing a backdrop that European courses simply cannot match.

Accommodation ranges from intimate boutique hotels overlooking the marina to five star resort complexes with courses on the doorstep. The Steigenberger Golf Resort sits directly alongside the El Gouna Golf Club, whilst The Chedi and Mövenpick offer luxury alternatives for those wanting to combine golf with the very best in Red Sea hospitality. Budget conscious groups will find competitive all-inclusive packages at a range of resort hotels, whilst those seeking exclusivity gravitate toward The Chedi or the Sheraton Miramar with its private beach setting. Access is straightforward for British golfers, with direct and connecting flights into Hurghada International Airport just 30 minutes from the resort, and journey times from major UK airports typically under six hours.

Top 10 Golf Courses in El Gouna

From championship layouts to hidden gems, these are the courses every golfer should have on their list when planning a golf holiday in El Gouna.

Designed by Gene Bates and Fred Couples, this 18-hole championship course expertly balances the desert landscape with lush fairways, following the natural topography of the property and flanked by beautiful lagoon hazards. The spectacular backdrop of Red Sea mountains, turquoise waterways, and clear blue skies makes it one of the most visually stunning courses in Africa.

Cascades at Somabay was the first championship golf course in North Africa and the Middle East to be designed by one of the modern-day “Great Triumvirate”, with Gary Player creating this stunning layout on what was previously a military base. The 18-hole, par 72 course stretches 6,998 yards and carries a slope rating of 138, making it the most challenging course in the region.

One of the most popular stay-and-play options on the Red Sea, the Steigenberger Aldau Golf Resort sits directly alongside its course and offers one of the most convenient and well-appointed golf hotel experiences in Egypt. Its central Hurghada location makes it an excellent base for exploring multiple Red Sea courses during a single trip.

The Mövenpick Resort & Spa El Gouna sits right alongside the El Gouna Golf Club, offering a convenient stay-and-play package with transfers, green fees, and luxury resort facilities. The lagoon setting and easy access to El Gouna’s marina and town centre make this a favourite for golfers who want to combine excellent golf with a lively social scene.

The Chedi El Gouna offers access to the championship El Gouna Golf Club course, with the world-class layout offering enjoyable rounds for all levels through multiple tees on each hole. As one of El Gouna’s most luxurious hotels, The Chedi pairs five-star accommodation with an unmatched course setting, making it the premium choice for discerning golf travellers.

Ancient Sands offers a world-class 18-hole championship golf course (par 72) designed by Karl Litten, balancing desert landscape with lush green fairways and blending into the natural topography of the terrain, with lagoons creating natural water hazards on many holes. It also features a 3-hole golf academy with full practice facilities, making it ideal for golfers of all levels.

Madinat Makadi boasts an 18-hole championship course — the longest in the region at 7,500 yards — alongside a 9-hole par 3 executive course, and was voted Egypt’s No.1 Golf Resort from 2014 to 2019 at the World Golf Awards. The front nine is distinctly flatter with ponds and creeks, while the back nine is routed through the hills and wadis of the desert, creating two very different challenges in one round.

The Jaz Makadi Saraya is a well-regarded all-inclusive golf resort in the Makadi Bay area, offering easy access to the Madinat Makadi Championship Course just a short distance away. It is a popular choice for golfers who want full resort facilities combined with access to one of Egypt’s top-rated courses.

The Sheraton Miramar Resort El Gouna is just one kilometre from the El Gouna Golf Club and offers stay-and-play packages from 3 nights with included green fees. It provides a more intimate resort atmosphere, with a private beach and easy access to both the course and El Gouna’s iconic Abu Tig Marina.

Designed by Gary Player, the 9-hole Par 3 Challenge Course at Soma Bay is part of the Golf Academy where individual and group lessons are offered by PGA Golf Pros, and is ideal for both beginners and experienced players looking to sharpen their short game. It offers a fun, accessible alternative to the main championship layout next door, perfect for a warm-up round or a twilight session.

Best time to play golf in El Gouna

El Gouna’s greatest strength is its year-round playability, but timing your visit well still makes a considerable difference to your experience. October through April represents the peak season and for good reason — temperatures sit comfortably between 20 and 28 degrees, course conditions are immaculate, and the cooler evenings make for ideal post-round relaxation. December through February is particularly popular with European golfers escaping winter, and the courses are busiest during these months, so booking tee times in advance is essential.

Spring and autumn offer the sweet spot of good conditions with slightly lower prices and fewer visitors. March, April, October and November all deliver reliable sunshine and comfortable temperatures without the intensity of peak winter demand. May and September represent excellent value, with temperatures still very manageable in the mornings and significant savings on accommodation and green fees.

Summer — June through August — brings intense heat, with afternoon temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees. Early morning rounds are very much possible and enjoyed by residents and determined visitors, and package prices drop substantially during these months. If heat doesn’t deter you and budget is a priority, summer visits can deliver exceptional value with practically empty courses and heavily discounted rates. Winter is genuinely perfect — if weather certainty and ideal playing conditions are your priority, El Gouna between November and March is as reliable as golf destinations get anywhere in the world.

Frequently asked El Gouna golf break questions

We’ve built golf packages across the El Gouna region to suit every preference and budget. Whether you’re after a short break combining El Gouna’s two home courses, a week exploring multiple Red Sea venues including Soma Bay and Makadi Bay, or a luxury escape built around The Chedi and private course access, we can arrange everything from flights and transfers to guaranteed tee times and hotel upgrades.

El Gouna is one of the most reliably sunny destinations on earth, receiving over 350 days of sunshine annually. Rain is genuinely rare at any time of year, and course closures due to weather are virtually unheard of. The main consideration is temperature rather than rain — October through April delivers ideal playing conditions with comfortable warmth and cooling breezes off the Red Sea.

The combination of desert landscape, Red Sea scenery, and resort-quality infrastructure creates an experience that European golf simply cannot replicate. Courses here work with genuinely dramatic natural terrain — desert dunes, mountain ridges, and saltwater lagoons creating visual and strategic variety that feels completely unique.

El Gouna Golf Club is the obvious starting point — a Gene Bates and Fred Couples design with spectacular lagoon and mountain views that sets the tone for the destination perfectly. Ancient Sands Golf Club, the second home course in El Gouna, offers a different challenge through desert terrain and is excellent for players of all abilities.

El Gouna is a self-contained resort town where a hire car is generally unnecessary for golfers staying to play the home courses. The El Gouna Golf Club and Ancient Sands are both within easy reach by hotel shuttle or taxi, and the town itself is compact and walkable.

El Gouna delivers exceptional value compared to European golf destinations, particularly when you factor in the quality of courses, accommodation, and the overall resort experience. A three night stay-and-play package including flights, accommodation, and two rounds typically costs between £500 and £900 per person depending on the hotel and season.
