Key Information
The Algarve‘s golf scene has long been dominated by coastal golf. Ombria is something different. Tucked into the hills above Loulé, around 30 minutes north of Faro Airport, it sits among citrus groves, fig and carob trees, small farms, and villages with cobblestone streets that most Algarve visitors never see. The setting alone is worth the drive.
Jorge Santana da Silva, the Portuguese architect behind the design, opened the course in April 2023 with sustainability at the core of every decision. Ancient levadas (traditional water channels), noras (water wheels), old lime kilns, and stone walls were preserved and integrated into the layout rather than cleared. The result is a course with a genuine sense of history beneath it. Ombria is par 71, measuring 5,802 yards from the back tees, with six par 3s, seven par 4s, and five par 5s offering a varied mix of challenge and character throughout the round.

The front nine runs along a narrow valley on an east-west axis and is where the course makes its strongest demands. Water features on almost every hole. The par 3s play from elevated tees with significant club selection challenges, and the par 5 second, at 566 yards from the back tee, requires patience and precision to navigate cleanly. Accuracy counts far more than distance on this stretch. Low handicappers will find it engrossing; higher handicappers should prepare to lose a ball or two.
Here are some key facts for playing Ombria:
The course plays year-round. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable windows, with mild temperatures and the course in excellent condition. Summer mornings are fine; the inland heat builds quickly by mid-morning, so early tee times are worth booking.

Despite only being open since April 2023, Ombria feels like it belongs in the Pantheon of top Algarve golf courses. By incorporating the existing natural and man made elements of the environment, Santana da Silva has created a course that fits perfectly into the surrounding Portuguese countryside. A few honest things to know before you arrive. There is no driving range on site, which a number of visitors have flagged; the putting green is available and it’s worth using it. The clubhouse food service finishes at 5pm, which is earlier than most would expect. On-course drinks and buggy hire are on the expensive side.
However, The maintenance standard is consistently excellent. Fairways arrive immaculate, the greens roll true, and the bunkers are well-kept with good sand quality. The clubhouse is modern, the staff are genuinely warm, and the restaurant and bar handles post-round food and drinks in a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere with views across the course.
