Golf Breaks in Florida

Florida is one of those rare destinations where the golf genuinely matches the sunshine. With over 1,000 courses spread across the state, championship layouts sitting alongside relaxed resort tracks, and warm weather running well into the calendar, it’s hard to find a better value for a dedicated golf break from the UK.

There’s a reason Florida keeps pulling golfers back year after year. The sheer range of what’s on offer is difficult to match anywhere else in the world. Whether you’re after a lavish resort stay at a five-star property with 36 holes on the doorstep, a self-catering villa shared between a group of mates, or a boutique hotel tucked inside a gated community, Florida has the infrastructure to handle it all without fuss.

The state divides naturally into distinct golfing regions. Orlando sits at the centre, with a concentration of resort courses that would keep any group busy for a fortnight. The Tampa Bay area offers a compelling mix of coastal and inland layouts, while Naples and the southwest coast have built a reputation for quieter, more refined golf experiences. The Space Coast, the Panhandle, and the Palm Beach corridor each bring their own personality to the table.

From the UK, Florida is extremely well connected. Direct flights operate from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham into Orlando, Miami, and Tampa, with journey times typically sitting between nine and ten hours. The time difference of five hours westward is manageable and rarely disrupts a golfing schedule. Florida suits solo travellers, couples, corporate groups, and families in equal measure, which goes some way to explaining why it remains the most visited American golf destination for Europeans.

Best Golf Holiday Destinations in Florida

Florida works just as well for a first-time American golf trip as it does for someone returning for their fifth or sixth visit. The packages available cover everything from fully catered resort stays where you barely need to leave the property, through to fly-drive itineraries that let you work your way across the state playing different regions over two weeks. Orlando is the natural starting point for most groups given the volume and variety of courses within easy reach, but those who venture further afield to Naples, the Panhandle’s Emerald Coast, or the quieter stretches of the Atlantic coastline tend to come back with the strongest stories. Each region has a different rhythm and a different character, and the best Florida golf holidays tend to mix a couple of them together.

Beyond the fairways, Florida has more going on than people sometimes give it credit for. The food scene has matured considerably over the past decade, particularly in Miami, Tampa, and along the Gulf Coast, where fresh seafood is taken seriously and the restaurant culture reflects a diverse, cosmopolitan population. The state has a warmth to it that goes beyond the climate.

Families travelling with non-golfing partners or children will find Florida exceptionally well set up. The obvious draws like Walt Disney World and Universal in Orlando mean that non-golfers are never short of options, but even outside the theme park bubble there are beaches, wildlife reserves, kayaking, boat trips into the Everglades, and a remarkable variety of natural landscape for a place so densely populated.

The cultural identity of Florida is genuinely distinctive. Cuban influences in Miami, a strong Latin American heritage across much of the south, the laid-back Gulf Coast way of life, and the old-money elegance of Palm Beach all contribute to a state that feels surprisingly varied for those willing to explore a little beyond the resort gates.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Florida

From championship layouts to hidden gems, these are the courses every golfer should have on their list when planning a golf holiday in Florida.

Home to THE PLAYERS Championship and the most famous hole in golf—the island-green 17th—this Pete Dye masterpiece is a “bucket list” essential designed to test every club in the bag. To stay in the heart of the action, book the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa, which provides exclusive guest access to the course, a luxury spa to soothe post-round nerves, and a shuttle to the private Cabana Beach Club.

Steeped in history as the winter home of “The King,” Bay Hill is a classic, demanding layout that finishes on one of the toughest par-4s on the PGA TOUR. For the full experience, you must stay at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, where guests are treated like members and the intimate, 70-room lodge is adorned with memorabilia from Arnie’s legendary career.

Known as the home of the “Bear Trap” (holes 15, 16, and 17), this Jack Nicklaus-redesigned course is one of the most penal and exciting stops on the tour. After surviving the water-heavy back nine, retreat to the PGA National Resort, which recently underwent a $100 million renovation and features a stunning “Waters of the World” mineral pool complex and high-end dining at The Butcher’s Club.

Designed by Greg Norman, the Black Course at Tiburón features a unique “no-rough” policy, instead using crushed coquina shell waste areas to create a visually striking and fast-playing environment. To match the prestige of the venue, stay at The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón, a sanctuary of luxury that overlooks the course and offers a massive water park for families and an elite-level spa.

Formerly known as World Woods, the newly reimagined Karoo course by Gil Hanse has quickly become a modern Florida icon with its bold, sandy waste areas and rugged, “Nature Coast” aesthetic. The best way to experience it is by staying in the Cabot Citrus Farms Cottages, which are designed with a modern-meets-rustic flair to keep you fully immersed in the wilderness surroundings.

Set in a remote area of Central Florida on a former phosphate mine, Streamsong Red features dramatic elevation changes and towering sand dunes that feel more like the dunes of Ireland than the Florida coast. You should stay on-site at the Streamsong Lodge, a sleek, ultra-modern lakeside retreat where the rooftop bar offers the best sunset views in the state over the sprawling 16,000-acre estate.

The “Blue Monster” is famous for its length and its formidable water hazards, specifically the gruelling par-4 18th hole which is consistently ranked among the hardest finishes in golf. The definitive stay is the Trump National Doral Miami, a massive 800-acre resort featuring world-class villas, a sprawling “Royal Palm” pool, and four additional championship courses on the property.

A favorite among PGA TOUR pros for its “Carolina feel,” the Copperhead course features pine-lined fairways and rolling terrain that is a rarity in flat Florida. The closing three-hole stretch, known as the “Snake Pit,” is a true scorecard-wrecker. Stay on-site at the Innisbrook Resort, where the spacious, low-rise lodge suites are tucked into 900 acres of quiet woodland near the Gulf Coast.

This Jack Nicklaus Signature design features six holes that play directly along the Atlantic Ocean, offering salt-sprayed fairways and dramatic seaside views. For a coastal getaway, stay at the Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa, which offers multi-bedroom villas perfect for golf groups and a sprawling multi-level pool complex featuring a lazy river.

While the Red Course is known for its drama, Streamsong Blue (designed by Tom Doak) is celebrated for its massive, undulating greens and strategic bunkering that rewards creative shot-making. Since the resort is isolated, you’ll want to stay at the Streamsong Lodge to take advantage of the on-site activities like guided bass fishing and clay shooting between rounds on the Blue, Red, and Black courses.

Best time to play golf in Florida

January through to April is widely considered the peak season for a reason. Temperatures across the state during these months typically sit between 18°C and 26°C, skies are mostly clear, humidity is at its lowest, and the courses are in excellent condition. It’s also when prices are at their highest and availability tightest, so booking well in advance is essential if you have specific dates or courses in mind.

May and early June can offer a sweet spot for those willing to take a small gamble. Temperatures climb into the low to mid 30s and the first signs of the summer humidity begin to appear, but prices drop noticeably and the courses are rarely as crowded. Summer proper, from late June through to September, brings afternoon thunderstorms with some regularity. These are usually brief but they can disrupt a round, and the heat combined with high humidity makes morning tee times almost non-negotiable. Autumn, particularly October and November, is a period many experienced Florida visitors swear by.

The storms ease off, temperatures settle back into the comfortable mid 20s, and you’ll often find autumn pricing that sits well below the January peak. December can be excellent, especially around Christmas when the weather is near perfect, though prices tend to reflect that.

Frequently asked Florida golf break questions

Florida’s public access and resort course offering is exceptional. TPC Sawgrass’s Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra is the most iconic, home to the Players Championship and that famous island green par-3 seventeenth. Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Streamsong Resort in central Florida with three highly rated layouts, World Woods in Brooksville, and the courses at Tiburón and Lely Resort in Naples all regularly feature in best-of Florida lists.

For most itineraries, yes, a hire car is strongly recommended. Florida is a driving state and the distances between courses, hotels, and attractions are significant. Orlando is the exception to some extent, as many resort properties have multiple courses on site or within easy shuttle distance, but even then a car gives you far more flexibility.

For most UK and European travellers, the window from mid-October through to late April offers the most reliable combination of good weather, playable conditions, and manageable humidity. January through March is peak season and peak pricing. October, November, and early December can represent the best overall value, with warm temperatures, lower green fees, and quieter courses.

The volume and quality of courses is the obvious answer, but it goes further than that. Florida combines genuinely world-class golf with superb resort infrastructure, reliable warm weather, an extremely well-developed tourist economy that makes logistics easy, and a range of off-course options that make it viable for mixed groups and families.
